🍔 Review № 571 ━ 📍 Salles Burger ★★★☆☆ • Salles Burger opened in May 2022 in the Södervärn district in Malmö, and are a part of the new wave of smash burger joints that’s been sweeping the city this last year. Their restaurant is pretty small, but they have a lot of outdoor seating during the summer months. We visited them this summer, about a month after they’d opened. The place felt a bit like a classic fast-food joint, but with a more modern menu with about 10 different burgers including vegan varieties. We ordered their Cheese to the Knees Burger with two smashed beef patties, cheddar, pickles, red onions and chili mayo for 109 SEK (10.5 USD), and upgraded to a menu with french fries and a soft drink for an additional 30 SEK (3 USD). • When our burger arrived the bun looked quite big, but it was soft and fluffy, and didn’t take over as much as we’d feared. The smashed patties were decently seasoned and tasted quite nice, but didn’t have that deep crust that we expect from a smash burger and was too soft. And this softness was present throughout our meal. The finely diced red onions added some freshness but not very much texture, and their sweet pickles contributed with more flavour than crispiness. This sweetness was also highlighted by the sweet chili mayo. The burger was satisfying in a fast-food kind of way, but the sweet softness almost made it feel like a dessert burger. The french fries turned out to add some much-needed savoury crispness. They were covered with grill seasoning, which we usually don’t love, but in this case it worked out pretty well. • Salles Burger serve a decent grill kiosk burger, rather than a modern smash burger. 🍔 Review № 563 ━ 📍 Street Fam ★★★★☆ • Street Fam opened in central Malmö in early 2022, and belong to the new wave of smash burger joints that have dominated Stockholm’s burger scene and that have become more and more popular in the south of Sweden. When we visited them they were located in a very small restaurant with just a few seats, but now they’ve actually opened in a much larger location just a few hundred metres away. Their menu consists of around 10 different burgers, plus a few ”French tacos”. • We ordered two different hamburgers; a Cheesy with cheddar, onions, pickles, ketchup and mustard and a Chili Cheese with cheddar, onions, roasted onions, jalapeños, lettuce and chili mayo. Both burgers contained two 80-gram beef patties, and cost 89 SEK (8.5 USD) for just the burger or 119 SEK (10.5 USD) for a menu with french fries and a soft drink. Our burgers looked a bit squashed when they arrived, but the initial bite was very satisfying. The patties were nicely seasoned with a distinct – but perhaps not super crispy – crust. The brioche bun had been heated on the griddle, making it nicely toasted on the inside. The rest of the ingredients were evenly distributed, giving each bite the same kind of flavours, which we really appreciated. The sharpness from the jalapeños in our Chili Cheese was a bit too strong, so the Cheesy was our favourite burger with its well-balanced flavours. The french fries were very crispy and had a tasty potato flavour. • There are still a few things that Street Fam need to improve upon, and we weren’t totally wowed by our burgers. But they still served one of the better burgers we’ve eaten so far in Malmö, at least in the Möllan neighbourhood. 🍔 Updated review ━ 📍 Casual Street Food ★★★★☆ • When we first reviewed Casual Street Food in the north parts of Möllan in 2015, they were housed in a small location, and back then we felt that they served Malmö’s best burgers. Since then they’ve moved into much larger quarters just next door, and the interiors are really cozy with a Swedish 50’s style feeling. The entire place feels oldschool cool, with groovy 90’s hiphop and interiors that reminded us of when Flippin’ Burgers first opened in Stockholm. The menu was equally classic, and their burgers could be ordered with single or double patties, either smashed or just fried. We ordered a smashed Meals on Wheels, with cheddar, pickles, onions, ketchup, mustard and mayo for 120 SEK (11.5 USD), plus an order of french fries for 35 SEK (3.5 USD). • Our burger looked really nice, in a classic way. And the first thing we noticed was that the beef patty was very juicy and excellently seasoned. The flavours were well-balanced, and the sauces were nicely proportioned and added just the right amount of consistency and flavour. The onions were crispy, but their pickles were far too sweet. We didn’t like the bun either, as it felt old fashioned in a bad way with a very fluffy top bun that felt in the way. 🍔 Review № 501 ━ 📍 Rekas Burgers ★★★★★ • Rekas Burgers opened in the south parts of Malmö back in 2019. They quickly made a name for themselves and we've received a lot of tips about them over the last few years. When we visited them they had a whopping 18 burgers on their menu, including a vegetarian option in form of a halloumi burger. We ordered a Malmö Smash with two 100-gram beef patties, double cheddar, pickles, house mayo plus tallow- and butter caramelized onions. It cost 120 SEK (14 ISD) including french fries and a soft drink. During lunch hours they serve a burger menu for as little as 79 SEK (9 USD), which is among the cheapest we've seen for a high-quality burger restaurant. • Our burger looked nice when they served it, but was perhaps not the prettiest one we've seen. The soft and locally baked bun was nicely toasted and the burger itself felt great in our hands, despite being quite large. And we didn't need more than one bite to realise why they are so popular, because the entire burger was excellently balanced. We really appreciated the subtle heat from their own mayo and how it contrasted with the sweet onions. The cheddar was excellently melted as well, making everything nice and creamy. But the shining star was their beef; a 80/20 blend of chuck and brisket that they dry-age in their meat shop next door. The patties were thinly smashed with a great crust, while still being really juicy and flavoursome. 🍔 Review № 487 ━ 📍 Hungry Dane ★★★☆☆ • Hungry Dane is a Danish burger chain with several units in and outside of Copenhagen, and they’ve also recently expanded into Malmö in Sweden. We tried their burgers at the competition Danmarks Bedste Burger 2021, which they actually won. Their competition burger had an overwhelmingly long list of ingredients, including a Jack Daniels marinated 150-gram beef patty, fermented relish, triple cheese, beer marinated bacon, house sauce, red cabbage and a potato and Japanese milk bun hybrid that had been brushed with duck fat. • First impressions were good, and the presentation was excellent. The burger came served in a cardboard box, neatly placed in a paper pocket. The burger’s fluffy and saucy street food aesthetic was charming, and it felt great in our hand. The hybrid bun did its job nicely as well. The large patty was very juicy, but we would have liked to see more of a crust to make it stand out The thinly sliced bacon was amazing, with just the right crispness and a saltiness that we enjoyed every bite of. But unfortunately the large amounts of cheese and sauce were overpowering, and pushed out the other ingredients. The sauce had a somewhat grainy texture which wasn’t very pleasant. We didn’t really like the red cabbage either, as it made the burger difficult to eat. • Overall, we found that Hungry Dane served a good burger that got a bit lost in all the many details. 🍔 Review № 475 ━ 📍 Blacksmith Burger ★★★☆☆ • Blacksmith Burger is a small food truck located in an industrial park in Fosie, in the southern parts of the Swedish city Malmö. This truck comes highly recommended from you readers, so we made an effort to visit them seeing as they're only open for a few hours during weekdays during the lunch rush. We ordered their HotCheese 2.0 for 95 SEK (11 USD). The menu stated that it would contain two slices of cheddar, jalapeños and a hot parmesan mayo, but it also came with lettuce, tomato, pickles and red onions. We also added some bacon for 10 SEK (1 USD). • Our burger came neatly served in a small tray. The 180-gram patty was just the right size, with appropriate proportions between the beef, bun and other ingredients. Flavourwise, the burger had a mellow and warm heat that elevated it without taking over and becoming too spicy. The beef patty tasted alright and was properly seasoned, but was a bit compact and chewy. The other textures worked well with each other though; the tomato was thinly sliced and wasn't cold, the bacon was crispy and salty and the pickles were nice and savoury. We liked how the bun tasted, but it was a tad dry. The cheese didn't add any creaminess or flavour though, and didn't contribute much to this otherwise quite tasty burger.
