*leans in and whispers in your ear* MEMORY STONE
“Brenda please don’t - “ It’s cut off before Hershel can finish, and the world changes into someplace else in the blink of any eye.
It’s his first winter not in his own home. Stansbury is cold when the snow hits - not blisteringly so, but enough to make going outside unprepared a very big mistake. He’d stolen some blankets from town - bedsheets, quilts, anything he could get his hands on to insulate the laughable excuse of a bed in the place he’s been calling shelter.
It’s little more than a summer hunting cabin - well built, yes, and it keeps the wind and snow - and rain, in the summer - out, but does little for the cold. The cold bleeds straight through, as though the walls were wire mesh, and not thick wood.
He’s not stupid, though, and tried to gather firewood - stolen from woodpiles, dug out from beneath snow in the forest, even hacked off trees where he could manage. But the cold is still there, and while the cabin has a fireplace - and Hershel has stolen everything needed to make a fire - it’s always dead by morning and leaves the house frigid.
It’s so hard to move. Hershel knows enough to know that he can’t keep going on like this, and also that he doesn’t have hypothermia - but it’s only a matter of time before the cold wins over the meager heat he’s managed to keep in the house so far.
He knows he’s sick, too. Knows all too well - a fever, perhaps, something bad that’s only being made worse by his horrible living arrangements. He keeps blacking out, too - not having eaten the right amount in days. But he keeps coming back to himself, still here, still in the cabin - and feeling all the worse for it.
The animals are hibernating, and the residents of Stansbury don’t leave home except for when they need to. He wonders if he’ll starve, or freeze first.
