Punk rock legend Henry Rollins on "getting mugged by puberty" and becoming a man.
I was digging around down the back of the internet for videos about men and masculinity, when I came across this brilliant interview with US punk rock icon and spoken word artist, Henry Rollins.
He was being interviewed for a slightly weird, if not down right peculiar, British TV programme called Man Test -- I'd never heard of the show and from the look of this clip it was discontinued for a good reason -- but this interview with the terrifying-looking uber-Alpha-male Henry Rollins is hilarious and disarmingly open.
He talks about "being assaulted and mugged by puberty", looking for fights as a teenager, his loneliness and about convincing himself he doesn’t need intimacy.
Oh. Yeah. And then there's the stunningly cryptic (not to mention offensive) sex advice from his over-bearing dad:
“Don’t ever eat pussy off a girl who has shorter hair than you – I don’t know what that means now, or what it meant then."
I couldn't find out much about Man Test online -- so it looks like the programme has disappeared down the pre-internet memory hole.
One description I did find, though, describes Man Test as:
"A British TV program where famous people are asked a series of questions on their private lives, and asked to rate their feelings on certain topics from one to seven. The overall score will determine whether a person falls more into the 'masculine' or 'feminine' category.
"Where do you think Henry Rollins lands? The answer may surprise you."
