Anime of the day Pride Month: Manaria Friends
This is a short series. It's about two girls who go to a magical academy. Both are princesses in their own way, one a half-dragon and the other is physically normal. This is like a fantasy slice of life. The two girls both struggle with fairly normal feelings: isolation, body dysmorphia, and uselessness. These two find companionship in one another creating a friendship. It’s very clear and straightforward.
Yesterday I learned Japanese Weiss is Diana.
every character i know voiced by yoko hikasa has at least one thing in common
So I do 100% get why they don't want Anne participating in the evacuation drill as she is so much more talented/powerful than everyone else that it would make it so others don't have to learn what to do if she isn't there AND cause unnecessary damage to the school (as it happens anyway) and everything, but I DO think it's fucked up to give her literally nothing to do but watch
Anne came to the school largely to get a chance to feel like a regular person instead of a princess (as much as is possible) and to make friends and such, because realistically she is a prodigy and a princess so if it was about education it could have been done through tutors at the palace and would have been deemed unnecessary long ago
So to purposely exclude her and her alone and make her just sit there and watch was inevitably going to end the way it did because Anne wants to be around others AND desperately wants to be helpful/useful, and by giving her nothing to do at all but watch was ALWAYS going to result in her eventually ignoring that and trying to help unless things went so incredibly smoothly that she felt literally no need at all whatsoever to help (Which if that had been the case the drill would have likely been a failure anyway because part of the point seemed to be that things that they hadn't accounted for kept going wrong as that is a better way for them to learn what to do in an emergency than just being like "Nice everything went exactly according to plan and therefore nothing went wrong" (Which, side note, is actually a problem with things in real life like fire drills because we probably should have at least some instances where someone stands partway through and is like "Okay, bad news, this hallway you are supposed to go down to exit the building is blocked, what do you do instead to still get out safely while avoiding this area?" or whatever because that kind of stuff does happen in emergencies and if you don't prepare people for that stuff too it could easily become a problem in the future))
Realistically, if they REALLY wanted to avoid Anne participating and thus rendering the drill less effective than planned they should have given her an actual job to do that would have made her feel useful and like any other student while also keeping her from directly participating enough to allow others to slack off (or found a way to limit her powers or something)
Directly excluding her was also just mean, like ngl, she's so kind and caring and just wants to be treated like everyone else and this just feels so mean to be like "Hey so yeah, we all decided that you specifically are just going to sit and watch and not participate, sorry!"
Manaria Friends, or as it was released in the US as Mysteria Friends, has long been one of my favorite anime. Released as a short spin off of Rage of Bahamut, this "friends to lovers" yuri anime has developed a passionate cult following.
For me, what made this anime so special, aside from its creative and cute story telling, is the music. Originally written as a piano duet by Takashi Watanabe, this piece titled "Grea" as lived in my heart as my favorite piano piece since I first heard it.
This is my simplified solo arrangement of "Grea".
