“Im a medic in the Lunar Guard, but im not to good in a fight”
In your stream you said you don't use a tablet to draw. If you use a mouse do you have any tips or recemmended programs? Im trying to get started drawing but only have a mouse and its incredibly frustrating.
I think there was some miscommunication as I do use a tablet. Some of the programs you can use include Paint Tool Sai (I use this), Medibang Paint, FIreAlpaca, and Clip Studio Paint. CSP is on sale a lot, so even though it costs money, it’s pretty cheap and about the same if not better than Sai. Fire Alpaca and Medibang are free (I think) and I hear they’re pretty good. Of course, these are only a couple. There are a lot of different free art programs you can try.
Though I use a tablet, for the sake of this tutorial, I’ll be using a mouse.
Since you’re using a mouse, the most important part (in my opinion) is sketching what you want to draw on paper. Sketching digitally with a mouse is hell, so paper and pencil are your friends. Once you have the sketch done and cleaned up, you can scan it or take a photo of it and upload it to your computer.
I don’t own a scanner so I took a photo with my phone.
Then you can up the contrast of the image if you want and lower the opacity of the layer the sketch is on before you use your program’s lineart tool to line it. In Sai, there’s a separate lineart layer you have to create before you can line it, because the lineart tools only show up on a lineart layer.
I don’t know about the other programs, but sai has a pressure tool that lets you change the thickness of the lines and that’s pretty useful for mouse-users.
Once you’re done, you’ll have something like this and a bajillion anchor points that you can use to edit the lineart to your heart’s content:
If you don’t have something like that, you can always change the line thickness manually by erasing the edges to create a tapered line.
After lining, you can hide the sketch and add the flat colours on a separate layer either by using the bucket or colouring it normally.
If you want to shade your image, cell shading is usually the easiest to do with a mouse since with soft shading you have to worry about getting the opacity right.
You could use the selection pen to select the areas you want to shade and fill those areas with the bucket tool and set the layer to multiply and clip it if necessary. This works pretty well and is the easiest.
I did the same thing with the highlights. I used a clipping mask to make sure the highlights and shading were only on the hair. And Another clipping mask on the coat. For the eyes, I just preserved the opacity and shaded it on the same layer because it wasn’t that big of a space so it was easy to shade. The end result is something like this:
There are also a couple of videos on Youtube that can explain this better. I think this guy did a good job.
I hope this was helpful!
with a dm like mine, spilling my worst fear is kinda dangerous!!
