Random facts about the hard-of-hearing community that normal people may not know!
-Not every hard of hearing person knows sign language. I only know simple questions and answers in sign language, yet I just rely a lot on reading lips and just speaking normally. Most people I know don’t understand sign language, so I never used it!
-There are different kinds of hearing aids for different purposes! There are ones that look kind of like ear plugs, there’s the typical ones that go over the ear, there’s cochlear implants. New technology keeps coming out!
-Hearing Aids don’t always come in pairs, and they can come in practically any color! I only have a single hearing aid for my left ear cuz without it I would barely hear anything on that side! My right ear is below normal hearing level but it’s still quite functional so my doctors never saw a need for me to get a second one! Here’s a pic of my lil hearing aid! It’s sparkly purple with fun little buttons! It has a black battery door cuz that is how it connects with the microphones my teachers wear during school!(there’s a little add on piece that recieves the info from the microphone and connects to the battery door)
-A lot of people don’t know this, but there is a lot of places that work with hearing impaired people to have the best experiences they can! At movie theaters sometimes there’s movie showings with closed captioning on screen, but even if there isn’t closed captioning in screen— most theaters have closed captioning machines! Even if you aren’t hard of hearing, if you want the experience then next time you go to a theater just ask if you can get the closed captioning reader! It tends to be quite big, but in most theaters it is something that connects to your cup holder and has a cable that brings an adjustable closed captioning box up to face level. Quite interesting!
Irl I actually get super excited to talk about my ears with people. It’s nice to spread information, and talk to others about what is going on. It could be a conversation about surgeries, next steps, doctors, what it’s like— it just makes me happy! ❤️❤️❤️
So feel free to send me questions or ask for more clarification/pictures of something!
