“Look at the camera for me, kid,” Isaac spoke bluntly. “Don’t make this difficult.”
Kay did as he was told, gaze flickering to the lens of the camera, before he glimpsed back at Isaac. Pleading through the loose gag — though he daren’t open his mouth. It was a strip of t-shirt material. There only for show. Intimidation.
“Look at the damn camera,” Isaac hissed, jolting Kay’s attention back to the tripod.
He stared forward, desperately trying to force his mind to go blank. All he could think about was Isaac. Standing right there. So close. Close enough to kill him in a single movement.
Kay gasped out a quiet sob, doing his best to hide the shiver that ran down his spine. It was painfully obvious.
Around him, he smelt dust — disturbed when Isaac dragged him in here. Old. Old was the overwhelming feeling Kay got from being here. Every piece of furniture was covered in dust, or rotting away, or falling apart. The mattress held a thick layer of grime and there was no other bedding in the room. Even the carpet was threadbare and stained.
Kay shifted in the chair, tugging at his wrists, pulling halfheartedly. The rattling of a chain — cuffed behind him. Probably zip-tied to the chair itself. He had no chance against welded metal.
“Going to cooperate?” Isaac asked. “I don’t have to threaten you, do I?”
Kay nodded, then shook his head violently. No. He didn’t need threats. Not against him. Not against Halden. Not when Kay had been the one to drag him into all of this.
“That’s kind of you.”
Kind? What was that supposed to mean? Kay just — he wanted to make Isaac’s job easier. The easier Isaac’s job, the sooner he would… What? Kill Kay and move on to the next target?
Isaac pulled a — Kay wasn’t sure — some kind of ski mask over his face. He yanked it down, adjusting it before he stepped into the shot. With a swift movement, he pulled the gag from Kay’s mouth. Letting it hang limply around his neck. Another movement. Grabbing a fistful of Kay’s hair, forcing him to look straight into the camera.
“What do you want?” Kay whispered, “Just — what is it that you want?”
“To prove you’re alive,” Isaac let go — a violent shake before letting go — and stepped out of the shot. Back behind the camera. “I don’t get paid if I return a corpse.”
Kay nodded, glimpsing between the camera and Isaac. Again. He could cooperate. He could do as he was told. Sit still and behave. Kay could play along.
“What do you want me to say? I — I’ll do it — say it. I’ll do what you want,” Kay fumbled. “Please just — just don’t hurt Halden — don’t hurt him, please?”
“God, he said you were naïve.”
“He? Halden? You spoke to him?” Kay shook his head violently.
“No. Not Halden.”
“Who?”
“None on your business. Look at the camera.”
“And do what?” Kay’s words caught in his throat. “What do you want me to say? That I’m having a nice fucking vacation?”
“You’ve done enough,” Isaac flicked off the camera. “You’ve done plenty.”
“What now? What — what do you want? I — I did what you wanted.”
“Now Halden has show you how much he loves you.”
“What do you mean? Halden? Why? Don’t — please don’t bring him into this,” Kay gasped, “Not him — no — I won’t cause any trouble! I — please,” he shook his head, dissolving into tears at the mere thought of Isaac getting close to Halden. “Please! Please — he doesn’t deserve that
“Your boyfriend is a whole lot deeper in this mess than you know,” Isaac scoffed. “It’s a shame, really.”
“Fiancé. He — he’s my fiancé.”
“Oh,” his face contorted into an expression that was almost sympathetic. “I’ll try and keep that in mind. You know? It would be a whole lot easier if you just told me what I wanted to know.”
Kay took a deep breath in, before lifting his chin and looking upwards to meet the Isaac’s eyes. He was about to make the biggest mistake of his life. And he knew just as much, but there was nothing that could prevent it. Nothing he could offer instead.
“Do your worst. I’m not saying another goddamned word about Halden to you.”
