manipur is a northeastern state in india with two main communities in conflict, the meiteis (valley-dwelling majority, largely hindu) and the kuki-zo (hill-dwelling tribal communities, largely christian). conflict between them erupted in may 2023 over tribal status and land rights and has never really stopped.

on april 7 this year, a bomb went off at a civilian house in bishnupur district at 1am, killing two children: a five year old boy and a five month old infant girl, and critically injuring their mother. their father is a bsf (border security force) soldier. meitei groups blamed kuki fighters, kuki groups said they didn't do it. what followed was: around 500 angry protesters stormed a nearby crpf camp (central reserve police force, a paramilitary unit), and police open fired, killing two more protesters and injuring 31 others with gunshots. internet was shut down across five valley districts. curfew was imposed. and then, as it has happened so many times before with manipur, the news cycle moved on.

this conflict has been going on since may 2023. over 50,000 people remain displaced, living in relief camps with limited access to healthcare, sanitation, and food. the state has effectively been split in two, meiteis on one side, kuki-zo communities on the other, with no real dialogue between them and no resolution in sight. at least 44 people have been killed in armed clashes in manipur in 2026 alone. the government's response has consistently been internet shutdowns, curfews, and silence from the top. modi had very little to say about manipur throughout all of this.

isn't a government's most basic job to protect its people and resolve conflicts within its own borders? why has it continued to remain silent on this? they act as if they're not answerable to the people who elected them.
