Once the smallest plot of land in Manhattan. Around 1910 when New York City started buying up property in what is now the West Village to extend the old IRT subway line further downtown. David Hess, refused to sell his 5-story apt building at Christopher St & 7th Av. Citing eminent domain law, the city took it anyways, leaving Hess with this tiny triangle. New York City government then asked Hess to donate the land so that it could be used for a public sidewalk. Hess refused and took the city to court. “Interior Demolition”. While taking this picture the muscle-bound owner of the truck ran at me angrily yelling to stop (I’ve grown accustomed to this sequence of events). After learning I was a lettering nerd and not a city official documenting some sort of infraction his demeanor immediately changed and he was delighted and proud to have his truck photographed.
