Greene family appeals lawsuit dismissal

Family of Tamara Greene appeals dismissal of lawsuit against Kilpatrick, Detroit 1:06 PM, Nov. 23, 2011 By David Ashenfelter Detroit Free Press Staff Writer The family of a slain stripper said to have danced at a rumored wild party at the mayoral Manoogian Mansion in 2002 has appealed a judge’s recent decision to dismiss a lawsuit against ex-Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick and the city of Detroit. The family of Tamara Greene filed notice to appeal today in U.S. District Court in Detroit. Their lawyer, Norman Yatooma of Bloomfield Township, indicated he plans to appeal the judge’s decision to the U.S. 6th Circuit Court of Appeals in Cincinnatti. Greene, 27, was killed in a drive-by shooting in April 2003, some eight months after supposedly dancing at the party. Her children charged in a lawsuit that Kilpatrick and city officials sabotaged her murder probe to prevent her killers from being brought to justice and sued for her death. Chief U.S. District Judge Gerald Rosen dismissed the lawsuit Nov. 1, saying there is no evidence that Kilpatrick or other city officials derailed her murder investigation. There was no immediate comment from Yatooma, the city or Kilpatrick. Contact David Ashenfelter: [email protected]
Kwame's new house is BIGGER than the Manoogian
Awww yeah... we all know what King K squared can do with a 4,000 square foot mansion that he lived in at the expense of the city of Detroit. But with this new 5,000 square foot house? You can fit a whole lotta hookers in there! Can't afford to pay his restitution, but he sure can afford a super sized mansion. ----------
Original post on freep.com >> 12:26 AM, Nov. 15, 2011 By M. L. Elrick and Jim Schaefer Kwame Kilpatrick can only spare $150 a month for restitution, but that didn't stop him from moving into a 5,000-square-foot home that is bigger than the Manoogian Mansion. Kilpatrick, his wife and three sons moved Aug. 22 from a 3,588-square-foot home valued at $235,000 to a 5,016-square-foot home valued at $338,400. Both homes are in Grand Prairie, a city of 175,000 near Dallas. Citing an e-mail from Kilpatrick, the Detroit News quoted the former mayor as saying the move "became a necessity for my family." He called it "compulsory," but did not elaborate beyond saying it was not much more expensive than his previous home. Kilpatrick called a Free Press reporter and said he would have no comment for the newspaper, which broke the 2008 text message scandal that forced him out of office and ultimately sent him to jail. Texas parole officials said they approved Kilpatrick's move to the new home, which is 1,012 square feet larger than the city-owned Manoogian Mansion he once occupied for free. Kilpatrick attorney Daniel Hajji said: "So what if it's bigger? Tomorrow, if he gets an offer to live in the Taj Mahal for the same amount of rent, he would be foolish not to take it," Hajji said. "This is a family of five. Where do you expect him to live?" Nevertheless, a spokeswoman for Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy said she would make inquiries because Kilpatrick still owes Detroit $860,000 in restitution as part of the plea deal he reached to end the criminal case stemming from the text message scandal. Kilpatrick's new home raises questions about whether taxpayers should continue paying for the lawyers defending him against corruption charges. James Thomas, one of the court-appointed lawyers defending him in the federal case, said Kilpatrick's financial circumstances have changed: Kilpatrick is no longer imprisoned and is making some money on the lecture circuit, though Thomas said, "It is by no means lucrative." "I think that the court can and should look at his income," Thomas said. "It's my understanding that the parole authorities are ... on a monthly basis."
