I think it’s weird that they’re not trying to ape the bad angles and blocking of the original. Trying to “improve” it seems, off?

Movie Review | Manos Returns (Atomic, 2018)

Saw two of my follows review this earlier this month so figured I'd give this a look. While this isn't an especially slick production, the fact that it's an homage made by somebody who seems to understand how movies work means that it lacks the creaky, entombed rara avis quality of the original. And quite frankly I enjoyed spending time with the OGs and OG-adjacent (namely Tom and Jackey Neyman as the Master and his daughter, a positively glowing Diane Mahree) a lot more than the new, wisecracking protagonists. But I appreciate that this aside from a few lines at the beginning, this doesn't condescend to the material and lean into the original's reputation as a "so bad it's good" movie, and instead treats the proceedings with some level of seriousness. So I can't hate it, and at around an hour long (excluding the end credits), it goes down easily enough.

It must be said that Steven Shields is almost putting in too good a performance as Torgo, and lacks the je ne sais quoi brought to the role by John Reynolds. Perhaps he should have done like his forebear and gotten zonked out of his mind on LSD before shooting. And the movie deserves some props for believing in a diverse idea of beauty and being to willing to present Diane Mahree, in her '70s, and the Master's wives, who have a wide range of body types, as desirable.
