We finally reached Naran and although we fail to reach lake Saiful Maluk we achieve our secondary objective – a delicious meal of fresh caught trout! The trout were introduced by the British who brought eggs from Scotland. Professor Khan has been thinking about this meal since he was last here in 1976. We find a man who says he can get us fresh trout and after some time he returns looking furtive with his hands across his chest. He unzips his fleece and reveals the fish. The valley is very beautiful, narrow, steep and wooded with a patchwork of pasture and tiny ploughed terraces awaiting replanting. The steep slopes are fenced into tiny plots and there is stubble from a recent harvest - the area is famous for its delicious potatoes. Gujar herdsmen bring their animals from the plains to high summer pastures at this time of year and we have to squeeze past herds of goats, sheep, cattle and horses. They look hardy and carry their world with them and their fortune is in their flock. The older men are dark and fierce with beards and the women wear gold ear and nose rings and colourful scarves. They rest during the day, then in the evening they start off again and travel through the night when the traffic is lighter. In the dark our amazing driver Mazhar Ali Zeb has to brake suddenly on the steep dirt road. The valley is wooded with tall stately pines and the slopes on the far side all is green and undamaged whilst on our side, where the new road has been widened, all is devastation and ugliness. There are footbridges every mile or so over the gorge of the Kunhar River in the Naran Valley.
