Autopsy shows black teen killed by St. Louis police was shot in back

An autopsy on the body of the black teenager shot and killed by white St. Louis police officers this week shows the 18-year-old died from a single gunshot that entered his back and struck his heart, a medical examiner said on Friday. The finding could escalate tensions that flared immediately after the shooting Wednesday, as protesters and family members of the slain teen questioned police accounts that Mansur Ball-Bey pointed a gun at officers. The autopsy appears to contradict the account of the incident given by police, who said that two officers shot at Ball-Bey when he pointed a gun at them as he fled a home where police were serving a search warrant. St. Louis Police Chief Sam Dotson cautioned that the location of the fatal wound neither proves nor disproves the account given by the two officers, who said they fired four rounds at Ball-Bey. Police also said they recovered a gun from the scene and determined it was stolen.

There are so many variables … but he certainly wasn't facing, his chest wasn't facing the officers.

The shooting sparked angry clashes between residents and police Wednesday night, with officers turning out in riot gear and using tear gas on some protesters. More protests are planned for Friday night in the area of the shooting, according to social media posts by activists. The flare-up came less than two weeks after the St. Louis area was flooded with protesters from around the country marking the anniversary of the Aug. 9, 2014, killing of unarmed black teenager Michael Brown by a white police officer in nearby Ferguson, Mo. The law gives police officers latitude to use deadly force when they feel physically endangered. The Supreme Court held in a 1989 case that the appropriateness of the use of force by officers "must be judged from the perspective of a reasonable officer on the scene" rather than evaluated through 20/20 hindsight. The Justice Department cited that legal threshold earlier this year when it cleared officer Darren Wilson for the Brown shooting.

The fear that we would like to critique here is the fear of forming one’s own opinion, the fear of developing one’s own analysis and then acting upon it. We do find fault in this fear of the White Ally. To be a White Ally is to stop thinking for one’s self, to blindly follow a leader based on no other criteria than their identity. St Louis Hotspot- Another Black Teen Shot...in the back

St. Louis, Missouri — When St. Louis police went to execute a search warrant on a residence, things got out of hand quickly. As they arrived at the home, two armed suspects fled the house, and police ordered them to drop their weapons. One of them did. The other one, Mansur Ball-Bey, 18, did not and reportedly pointed his gun at officers. It’s another black teen shot dead by police. But there is more to the story somewhere.

His friends and relatives say he was another victim of racist police violence, and was not a criminal. Yet the residence had crack cocaine and 4 more guns, three of which were stolen. Which indicates that Mr. Ball-Bey was not a saint. However, the autopsy results have created a firestorm in St. Louis.

Autopsy – how’d that happen?

An autopsy was performed on Ball-Bey and it was learned that he was shot in the back. How did it happen? Was he actually running away? Where was the placement of that back wound- on the side or directly in the back?  The placement of that gunshot wound is extremely relevant to what happened.

The police account is that Ball-Bey pulled his weapon and pointed it at police and was then shot. The protests are on. The autopsy report was fuel on the racial fire that St. Louis did not need.

It is clear that Ball-Bey was no angel. But the autopsy results released may not have been specific enough to explain what happened, which has created another problem in St. Louis.

St. Louis officers are already “hinky” about shooting anyone of color, and their ranks have been decimated from personnel leaving. By next year, will St. Louis have any police at all, or will they have to contract out for officers? They are down to 70 officers and need 160. Or will they just leave the city to anarchy?

8/21/15 This week a 9 year old black girl(Jamyla Bolden) was shot and killed in her Ferguson Home during a suspected drive by shooting and an 18 year old black boy(Mansur Ball-Bey) was murdered by police in St. Louis City. Immediately after Mansur’s death the community came out to grieve and the police responded with violent military style tactics.  Since all of this happened I have seen way too many articles/posts/comments/etc... talking about the fact that we should focus on black on black crime and questioning why no one was taking to the streets for Jamyla.  The truth is that the same community that stands on the front lines was actually talking about Jamyla. They were reaching out to the family, working on raising money, and held at least one vigil for her. The people out to invalidate our movement only see what they want to say.  This prompted me to go on a brief but straight to the point rant about black on black crime and why I’m done talking about it with the majority of people.

An autopsy of 18-year-old Mansur Ball-Bey, who was killed by St. Louis policemen on Wednesday, has revealed that he died from a single wound in the back, media reports quoted police officials as saying.

It was earlier reported that St. Louis police officers killed the 18-year-old while conducting a search on his home.

Police claimed that two suspects had been attempting to flee, when the young man pointed a gun at officers and refused to drop it, prompting them to shoot and kill him. The other man remains on the run.

On Thursday, St. Louis police launched tear gas and rubber bullets against protesters in the wake of the death of the 18-year-old teenager.

Violence has erupted approximately a quarter of a mile from where a demonstration was underway to commemorate the one-year anniversary of another young black man, 25-year-old Kajieme Powell killed by police.
