Maple Key contributor Josh Lees ( lickspittlecomics ) has a pair of cowboy boots in the colors of the New Mexican flag. His 6-part story "Rigel and the Star Teens" will run through the entire first year of Maple Key.

Lees' work--in particular his Star Teens stories (which are part of his MFA Thesis at Vermont's Center for Cartoon Studies)--is largely concerned with coming-of-age narratives in fanciful settings, drawn in a fun, Archie-influenced style.

In each of Lees' Star Teens vignettes, his pubescent heroes search for love, adventure, and their own place in the galaxy--all in between puns, of course. Maple Key contributor Iris Yan is a globetrotting Brazilian cartoonist who has a PhD in Mathematics and is a professionally trained aura reader. Her story "Hotline," the first installment of which will appear in the first three issues of Maple Key, fictionalizes Yan's experiences as an operator in a student-run support hotline.

Yan's work is characterized by a simple, clean style that is extremely readable and more often than not uproariously funny. Her studies at Vermont's Center for Cartoon Studies honed her already considerable storytelling chops.

Mission

Maple Key Comics is a comics anthology magazine, released bi-monthly. Dedicated to featuring the work of talented emerging cartoonists. Focusing on serialized stories, Maple Key Comics brings you the joy of new installments of your favorite stories with the connivence of having them all in one book.

Maple keys are the winged fruit that fall from maple trees like little helicopters (they are also called whirligigs or whirlibirds.) If comics are the fruit, Maple Key Comics hopes to be the wings.
