In reviewing the most recent issue of Maple Key Comics, a quarterly art journal featuring short comics, one of the standouts was artist Iris Yan, with her autobiographical sketches in “Hotline,” about her time working the phones at a crisis center. What makes “Hotline” unique is not only her portrayal of the people involved as cute-looking animals (she’s a pig) but how she finds the humor in what…

What Do You Do - More comics at The Nib
Maple Key Comics is proud to welcome Iris Yan back for her second three-part story in our humble publication. This time around, Iris brings us FRIENDS, a collection of vignettes about old acquaintances. But, as with all of Iris' stories, these people are rarely who they seem to be. The first chapter features unexpected evangelism, tentative reaches for approval, and general social ineptitude--all, of course, in Yan's streamlined, charming funny animal style! Just one week to go before Issue 4 hits the shelves! Preorder yours today! Or, make sure you get to read ALL of FRIENDS, plus our other incredible features, by getting a subscription to Maple Key 4-6!
Maple Key contributor Iris Yan is a globetrotting Brazilian cartoonist who has a PhD in Mathematics and is a professionally trained aura reader. Her story "Hotline," the first installment of which will appear in the first three issues of Maple Key, fictionalizes Yan's experiences as an operator in a student-run support hotline.
Yan's work is characterized by a simple, clean style that is extremely readable and more often than not uproariously funny. Her studies at Vermont's Center for Cartoon Studies honed her already considerable storytelling chops.
You can see more of Yan's work at her website. Stay tuned for more contributor spotlights as the Maple Key Kickstarter continues!
