I pass this tree often on my commute to and from the mountain top. I hope to live in it during one of my life times. It’s called Mapou here in Haiti, Cyphostemma mappia. It’s sometimes mistaken for a type of baobab, though it is member of the grape family (Vitaceae) and unrelated to the true Baobabs of Africa, which we also have planted in the yards. This species is endangered and we’ve unfortunately lost many during Hurricane Mathew. Luckily we have some in the nursery if anyone is willing to plant them. #growninhaiti #mapou #giant #cyphostemmamappia #haiti #ayiti #endangered #reforestation #preservation #plantsomething #dreamhome #liveincolor #mountainlife #islandlife #tree
Had an amazing visit from @kelushandalus recently. We explored the area and discussed many ways that the true beauty of Haiti can be experienced. I look forward to planting many trees with you in the future! #growninhaiti #selfie #volunteer #visit #haiti #ayiti #mapou #trees #reforestation #preservation #peace

#2356 - Myrsine divaricata - Weeping Mapou
Myrsine was the ancient Greek pharmacologist and botanist Pedanius Dioscorides name for the Myrtle - not, in fact, related to this plant. Divaricata refers to the growth habit - the twigs branch at almost right angles, repeatedly, until the branchs are strongly interlaced.
A common small tree or shrub in many parts of Aoteoroa.
The small leaves and divaricating habit probably evolved to protect them from browsing by the giant flightless moa birds - quite a few shrubs in New Zealand have the same habit.
There are over over 280 species worldwide, often tropical or subtropical. In the United States, the genus is known as colicwood. Some species such as M. africana and M. australis are grown as ornamental shrubs.
