“Before the race, people told me I was “gold-medal capable.” I guided such platitudes in one ear and out the other. I never truly absorbed my potential, that it could be me. I’ve actually raced at this level for years, but my self-concept apparently had a junk mail filter on “best in the world.” The morning of the race, I was still bleating at Dean: “Is this actually possible?” and then ignoring him every time he said yes. I never believed it until the split second between when I saw the 300 meters-to-go banner and when I looked under my arm to see the winning sprint fly past.

The reality is—and this is the global lesson part, so pay attention: I was always that good. Wins are never assured, but I always had that potential. I just never let myself enjoy it, and that is a regret.”

“Cycling” rant.

I watched the women's road race in Rio.  Super exciting!  An amazing performance by Mara Abbott and all of the others.  Mara’s story is inspiring and makes me think hard about how the world will look at and treat my daughter. Mara is an American pro cyclist who has won at the highest level of her sport repeatedly, but can't afford to live on her salary alone (a comparable male pro cyclist might make millions in a year with his salary and endorsements). And I think women’s cycling is just as exciting, if not more so, than the men’s.  

I want my daughter to grow up in a world where her performance is viewed equally with her brother’s. It is disgraceful to think that there is such a gap in pay between men’s and women’s sports (too many examples to list).  I know there are arguments about revenue generated, etc.  But that argument doesn’t truly explain the gap in some of the sports ... like women’s soccer for example. The discrepancy in pay by percentage of revenue generated is astronomical.

Women in sport, the media, influential women in corporate positions, and of course, all of us dumb guys out here, must do more to support female athletes.  I will do it not only because I want my daughter to have the same opportunities as my son (not just in sport), but because equality is something all of us should support.  

Women’s sports need more corporate support, and Corporate support is not only based on return on investment, sometimes it’s about passion from the leaders of the company.  We need corporate leaders who step up and sponsor women’s team equally to men’s teams.  Billionaires out there, like those that support the dumb politicians, need to put some of their cash into women’s sport instead because it’s the right thing to do (and they can afford it). 

This is good for everyone.
