Released in 2000, the Samba de Amigo Maracas Controller was designed specifically for the rhythm game Samba de Amigo on the Sega Dreamcast. This unique peripheral allowed players to engage with the game by physically shaking maraca-shaped controllers in sync with on-screen prompts, offering an immersive musical experience.
Each maraca is equipped with an ultrasonic transmitter that communicates with a sensor bar placed on the floor in front of the player. This setup detects the position and movement of the maracas, allowing the game to register shakes in three distinct positions: high, middle, and low.
While primarily designed for Samba de Amigo, the maracas controller is also compatible with a few other titles, such as Namco's Mr. Driller and SNK's Cool Cool Toon, albeit with limited functionality.
