The banana peppers we were sun drying are finally ready. So what better use than make some Maricheeni puttu to have along with it. Maricheenii is nothing but cassava, known as Kappa in other parts of Kerala & Maravalli Kizhangu (மரவள்ளி கிழங்கு) in Tamil Nadu. Cassava is again sun dried & powdered to make Tapioca flour. Cassava is native to South America . This was believed to be introduced or rather popularised in Kerala in 1880s by the illustrious Travancore King, Visakham thirunal from Brazil to assuage the rice scarcity during famines, even though nutritionally poor . This is something which Mohit Balachandran & I have debated because he had believed it is Portuguese who introduced Cassava earlier in Goa & this must have come to Kerala. Turns out he may be right. A M Sawyer in his paper Tapioca Cultivation in Travancore published in 1895, Forrester mentions around 17 variants of Cassava being cultivated in South Kerala. 1) Pacha Aviyan 2) Vellari Aviyan 3) Chomala Aviyan 4) Kari Aviyan 5) Chaanha Aviyan 6) Chenkonban 7) Neduvangaadan 8) Karimmaravan 9) Neduvalikkan Karimmaravan 10)Aana Maravan 11) Kattila Maricheeni 12) Kooda Maravan 13) Elavam Kappa 14)Aavanakkum Kappa 15) Vella Maracheeni 16) Olavan Kappa 17) Kili vaka It is highly unlikely all this diversification happened in the span of a decade & sadly most of these don't exist at present .Regardless Malayalis took upto Cassava and how. In this version, Cassava is sun dried, powdered , mixed with roasted rice flour , made slightly wet and steamed in a bamboo cylinder with tons of grated fresh coconut. My earliest memory of this is my aunt bringing hot puttus and my grandmother making a nice blackened chilli chammandi aka chutney . Cassava has a natural sweetness ( no wonder called maricheeni here) which pairs it well with deep fried sun dried yogurt chillies. This makes it very carb heavy with barely any protein or fiber. So you are mostly likely to be hungry again before the clock strikes noon! #tapioca #cassava #kappa #maracheeni #puttu #morumulaku #glutenfree #vegan #vegansofinstagram #tapio #yuca #manioc #travancore #southamerica #foodhistory #foodloose #trivandrum #naadan #home (at Trivandrum, India) https://www.instagram.com/p/B_e9jnbFXtL/?igshid=xwx4544l7rql
