The original Marathon trilogy is an intense experience about exploring cramped quarters, using sound cues to be forewarned of impending danger, using offense as your only real defense, and getting high-end enemies teleported to your current location because you pissed off an AI. I can't express enough how pleased I am with the way Marathon (2026) has turned out. I thought it'd probably be good, I didn't think I'd be so immediately willing to treat Marathon, Marathon 2: Durandal, Marathon Infinity, and Marathon (2026) as cohesively in conversation with each other. It helps that Marathon (2026) appears to be leveraging Marathon Infinity's weirdness as a safeguard against messing anything up. Some of the old lore doesn't line up with the new game. That could be explained by retcons or treating the game as a reboot, but...
