Do Androids Dream........
My absolute favourite part of the Marathon games has always been the S'pht Compilers. I doodle them quite a bit already so I might as well do a more proper drawing of one I thought. This design is somewhat merging some different S'pht designs from the different games, but mostly draws on the Compilers from the first game in the classic trilogy.
just finished marathon 2
to be in Lh'owon…
My unhinged headcanon?
Yeah, so basically, my headcanon is that Murderbot takes place in the same general universe as Halo and Marathon do, but with a divergent timeline.
All 3 universes have the same canon events in the late 2100s relating to cyborgs made from dead/terminally ill people in the asteroid belt, the first "SecUnits" AKA Marathon's Battleroids (the security guard you play as), AKA the inspiration for the Orion project and the Spartan program.
The use of sub-lightspeed cryosleep ships for the very earliest colonies, followed by the discovery of a slower, more unstable form of wormhole/slipspace travel (Shaw-Fujikawa Translight Engines) that opens up much more colonization, but is still slow enough that giant cryosleep ships (like the Phoenix class or the UESC Marathon) are a requirement. Eventually, they figure out Forerunner-ish portal stabilization tech, so they can use static wormholes to enter slipspace and just pop in and out at specific spots, instead of having to fuck around and settle for "we're like 3 AU away from where we planned but at least we're in the right system so that's nice"
There's a few divergent places in the timelines between the Marathon, Halo, and Murderbot universes and I think Marathon's the closer one, since brain-mapped "smart" AI aren't a thing and as such, bot-human constructs with real neural tissue are required unless you get REALLY creative with "dumb" AI to make them human-level smart, like ART or Durandal.
Biggest timeline divergence is that, through random chance and minor differences, humanity doesn't encounter the Pfhor slavers or the Covenant zealots (because Durandal didn't exist to encounter the former, and the Central System running Harvest was a dumb AI instead of Sif's emotional ass, so no forgetting to do maintenance cause Mack was flirting too hard)
As such, there's no Human-Covenant War or fall of Tau Ceti, meaning the Insurrection actually happens. Without smart AI, there's no Assembly, meaning no Spartan-II program, so the UESC/UEG/Colonial Authority collapses, and corporations fill the void after a few decades of disorganized systemic collapse, creating the Corporation Rim. Fast forward a couple two-three hundred years and you're at present-day in Murderbot's and Marathon's timelines, although the Boomer/Rozinante is so far outside human space by then that you don't get to see that.
The unnamed "Alien Remnants" in the Murderbot universe seem a whole lot like Forerunner, Precursor, or Jjaro tech, complete with illegal exploitation, mind altering properties, inexplicable stealth fields, superheavy synthetic elements, and the potential to completely wipe out a fucking colony with a mysterious fungal infection that can also spread to computer systems.
