My first marathon: The aftermath
Now that #chicagomarathon2017 is done, whats next? A new goal for a new season #2hourhalf
“Running is nothing more than a series of arguments between the part of your brain that wants to stop and the part that wants to keep going.” -Unknown
It’s been over a month since I ran my first marathon in Chicago. There have been times when I wanted to write in this blog, but something always seemed to stop me. Even though I have more free time without this rigid training schedule, that time…

A real sore spot
A real sore spot - "Sometimes you eat the bear, and sometimes the bear eats you."
“Sometimes you eat the bear, and sometimes the bear eats you.” -A wise fella
Well it didn’t take long for my whole spring to get de-railed. I’ve been having a really great running winter. My 5K time was slowly improving, I got a 10K PR and I was killing it at track (in my own way). Things were really looking good for me to have an awesome spring, so I signed up for the Providence Half Marathon…

So what's the plan?
So what’s the plan?
“A man who does not think and plan long ahead will find trouble right at his door.” -Confucius
Well lucky for Confucius, I’ve had a long time to plan this marathon. I knew I was in last fall, which gave me all the time in the world to not think about it. When January rolled around, I knew I should take the time as a gift and figure out a plan for the year. As a business person, I tend to think…

Two 10k's. One Month.
I ran my first race (10k) of the year on January 5. I won't get into details for this post, but you should know--I was super late to the start (there was no start!) and just decided to take my time. I'd done this race before, and although they started at a different location, I am well familiar with Central Park and all of it's goodies (Harlem Hills and West Side Hills) so I knew it was going to kick my ass. I just wanted to get some sort of exercise in, and I felt like, while I'd been avoiding races and getting back into the swing of things, there's always going to be that *one* before you realize again how strong you are. And I kept pushing it back (6 months! Outside of the Jingle Bell Jog 4M in December, I'd not run a race since July 1!) and back and finally here I was in a new year and finally at a point to start repeating races again, and I didn't want to open up my year like this.
Anyways. What matters is I ran a mile to the start (thanks, super late arrival) and then the full 10k course and lived to tell the tale. The next day I even went to a spin class!
And so this is again the beginning of my journey. I have the NYC Marathon that I will run this year.
I have the Brooklyn Half that I want to run again. And PR. (2:15!)
I have--I will admit openly--25lbs I would like to lose. (C + I have joined Weight Watchers together. I have to say it is a lot easier to do it with someone. And to have everyone in the house sort of going towards a common goal)
I have my health that I want to take control over again.
So this means, not much, but something. Little by little. Right now I have little expectations:
Gym at least 3 times a week (I've been avg'ing about 4)
At least two runs a month over 6 miles
C + I recommitted to bringing back the adventure to our running (destination runs)
1 spin class a week (and I have been sandwiching it between two 1-mile runs)
Fingers crossed for 1 lb a week weight loss.
So, the second 10k will be on January 26 (Brooklyn Hot Chocolate 10k). I'm excited because it'll only be my second-ever race not run by NYRR, it's in Brooklyn, and fits well into my goals. It's also the weekend before my birthday! woot! Again, no expectations, just run and finish. That's about all I'm asking of my feet right now.
This plan will of course change once summer hits and I'm supposed to transition into Marathon (gulp!) training, but right now--this is enough.
I'm excited to be back to me. It's been long enough. I got my endorphins running from my pre-work 5k this morning and I feel like nothing can stop me!
