Ed Caesar charts the history of the marathon and attempts to run 42.195 kilometres in under 120 minutes in his book 'Two Hours: the Quest to Run the Impossible Marathon' (Penguin Viking).

This is totally worth a listen. Caesar spent time in Kenya - home of the world’s best long distance runners.
The current marathon world record is 2:02:57, set by Kenyan Dennis Kimetto at the Berlin Marathon last year. Caesar predicts that the 2 hour mark will be broken in the next 20 years. That means running at 21km/hr for two hours (just in case you needed a hand with the maths there). I don’t think I could sprint that fast.
Caesar has lots of interesting facts including an observation on women runners that I quite like: “People seem to improve once they’ve become mothers.”
