“The movement is a rhythm to us. Freedom is like religion to us. Justice is juxtapositionin’ us. Justice for all just ain’t specific enough.” These are the words that stand out to me from Common and John Legend’s song about the Civil Rights Movement, “Glory.”
This song was also an anthem to around 50 Justice Champions who marched 250 miles from New York to Washington D.C. to end police brutality, racial profiling, and child incarceration. This nine day journey was called the March 2 Justice. So far in 2015, 568 people have been murdered by police in the US (Guardian). The prison population reaches 2.2 million inmates, racial minorities making up about an unproportionate 60% of that number (Sentencing Project). Nearly 50,000 children the age of 16-17 are being incarcerated per year nationally (Raise the Age NY). In response, the Justice League NYC strategized the march to deliver three pieces of legislation which consists of the End Racial Profiling Act, the Stop Militarizing Law Enforcement Act, and The Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention Act. These three pieces together are called the Justice Package.
