Just your typical children’s book stuff from Animorphs #15: The Escape
#23
theyre in my brain
It's just that what you have to understand about animorphs is that the most important thing about animorphs barely happens in animorphs. The most important moment in animorphs is when marco's dad says that in the year before his wife died he and his wife stopped fighting, their relationship became smooth sailing, it was like all the little things that any couple has trouble with just disappeared, and marco (maybe 14? 15? at this point?) listens to him say this and understands with cold certainty that what actually disappeared a year before his mother's ''death'' was his mother. This declaration from his father gives Marco a timeline for a familial trauma he had never before been able to fully parse, which is the precise moment in his life when his mother's body was taken over by a brain controlling slug from outer space--hey. hey. stay with me. look at me. look at my eyes. don't worry about the alien slug. just keep reading. this is a chilling and deeply compelling statement about patriarchy and colonialism and you have to not worry about the slug--anyway Eva Animorphs (an immigrant woman of color) lost all control of her life and voice and body and that was, in reality, the moment that Marco lost his mother to a colonial power, the moment he lost his childhood, the moment he and his mother lost their home, which even after winning the war they will never return to, but his father never understood that moment as anything but a mysterious sudden increase in harmony in his household. Because his wife stopped arguing with him.
What do you think are the funniest character moments for the six?
Cassie: Responding to Marco’s speculation that “female hork-bajir get all weird around bugs and snakes” by casually tossing a live snake into his hair in #13.
Tobias: Getting stuck to a dolphin he’s trying to acquire in #15, followed by: “Yes, I am going to be sarcastic the rest of the day. I nearly drowned. Now I’m going to go become the thing that nearly drowned me. I will be sarcastic until further notice.”
Marco: Trying to wake Cassie up by tapping on her window, and then tapping harder, and then tapping harder, and then bickering with Tobias about whether “she’s out in the yard playing Hacky Sack” is a normal thing to say... and then tapping a little harder and shattering the window all over her (#30). And the first thing she says on waking up is “Jake?”
Ax: The juvenile delinquency in #49: “I am a dangerous fellow and I am causing mayhem in this store” [rearranges the baby food display] “There. I have now shamelessly destroyed the symmetry of this shelf, undoing hours of labor by underpaid store employees. If you could see me, you would be frightened.”
Jake: The completely silent face journey we get in #33 as he hears fly-Marco get stuck in the fondue, human-Ax almost get arrested for eating too much cotton candy, bird-Rachel nearly drown in the chocolate fountain, fly-Cassie narrate Chapman’s bad hair day, and bird-Tobias try to salvage this all... and he’s sitting there as a human, having dinner with an entire table’s worth of Sharing full members, and can’t do a thing about it.
Rachel: Discovering that none of the now four human boys on the team can tie a tie, and then perfectly dressing Ax in a correctly sized three-piece suit and full Windsor in the time it takes Jake to pull someone else’s pre-knotted tie over his head (#21).
[Other people please add on ones I’ve missed!]
Sometimes a family is you, your best friend, your girlfriend, your cousin, a clone of those four and his nephew who is a bird.
