Thoughts on The Android (Animorphs #10) pt 2
Oh Erek is so cool actually what. Why did i dislike this book? Marco being marco? the ending of it? probly some of both i guess but it's not bad.
Oh that's why. Such 'intelligent' beings but they haven't yet figured out their definition of violence. I mean sure Erek isn't hurting the Yeerk in his head but he is stealing its memories and keeping it from living the life it intended to live, or any life at all. Like....that's a form of hurting/violence babe. I could think of a million ways the chee could help win this war without the fancy crystal, the first of which being running full defense. Go to a battle and just straight up be an animorph shield. no violence necessary beyond the enabling of it. Or be spies. Erek is already doing that and could be huge intelligence help for the animorphs. Could also probably set up communication with andalites or maybe other aliens to get allies in on this. like. come on. I know this needed to be a one off but like....seriously?
Animorphs #10: The Android thoughts (pt. 1):
See, I like this mini-adventure in the opening infinitely more than the one we got for #9. Sneaking into a concert in dog morph feels like a real thing 13-year-olds with shapeshifting abilities would do, and it gives us some excellent character moments between Jake and Marco. Plus, the opening not only directly gets us into the main plot — Jake and Marco notice Erek's lack of scent and start the discovery of the chee — but it also fits thematically for the book to open on a long description of what it's like to be a dog. I love the detail about Marco feeling immune to danger (he almost gets hit by a car and doesn't care) even though he very much isn't. Again, it fits with everything that's about to happen with Erek.
Ramón de Ocampo's Ax might be my favorite Ax voice. He sounds formal but warm, a little hesitant like he's in a foreign country, but still very natural.
Tobias and Marco are finally starting to get along, at least a little! Contrast the scene where they go flying together and dodge bullies both winged and two-legged with the sequence from MM1. Marco is starting to understand Tobias so much more, and Tobias is more willing to respect Marco now that Marco's fully committed to being an Animorph.
There is so much going on in that phone conversation between Marco and "Tom." Such as the fact that Marco has apparently been coming over to Jake's a lot less since the series began — how much time did he spend there before? Or the fact that Tom knows so much about Peter's life and career, apparently through osmosis — suggests that Jake's parents regularly ask Jake about Marco. Or the casual familiarity between them, again hinting at Marco being much closer with Jake's family than (for instance) Rachel is with Cassie's. Or the way that Marco blows up the instant he's talking to Jake, coming within a millimeter of saying out loud that he will kill Tom before he lets the yeerks take a second parent from him. KAA is masterful at getting tons of characterization and implied exposition into a few lines of dialogue.

the forgotten gear
this is about a key material to pack when on patrol. most people pack the standard stuff. water, snacks, tech, medkits, that sort of stuff. but the most important item that nobody packs is so simple it seems stupid
DUCT TAPE
the most useful things to pack. it can be used to repair gear and uniforms, make emergency patches on vehicles, so much more. and even (although i HIGHLY do not recommend) could be used to patch wounds in a pinch. hell, MythBusters did multiple episodes showing how useful that stuff is! you can find the videos on YouTube.
a roll doesn't even cost that much. maybe 13 bucks for the good brands. if you have the space among all your other gear, TAKE A ROLL. you'll discover just how useful it is pretty quickly! i mainly use it to temporarily repair the underfunded infrastructure in my area. even if it doesn't hold, tells the local council that someone needs to deal with it.
that's all i've got. pick up a roll at your local hardware store, stuff it in your pack and get to repairing!
stay silly everyone!
