Blue Note All-Stars: Cycling Through Reality

This beautifully shot video of Cycling Through Reality is from the actual recording session of the Blue Note All-Stars at the legendary Capitol Studios. The band is Ambrose Akinmusire on trumpet, Marcus Strickland on tenor sax, Lionel Loueke on guitar, Robert Glasper on piano, Derrick Hodge on bass and Kendrick Scott on drums.

Blue Note All-Stars | Our Point Of View

Blue Note Records will, every decade or so, put out an album featuring a band made up of some of their most popular and relevant bandleaders performing in an all-star group.  This is 2017′s iteration in that series of albums, featuring guitarist Lionel Loueke, trumpeter Ambrose Akinmusire, saxophonist Marcus Strickland, drummer Kendrick Scott, pianist Robert Glasper, and bassist Derrick Hodge.  The band is all young musicians, most of whom are known for pushing the boundaries of jazz in some way or another.  In some cases, like Lionel Loueke and Ambrose Akinmusire, that means a modern, sometimes avant-garde quality to their sound.  In others, like Robert Glasper and his frequent collaborator Marcus Strickland, it means they’re known for incorporating elements of hip-hop and neo soul into their music.  For this album, though, their sound is one settled in modern and energetic post-bop.  Most of the music on here was written by different members of the band, but it does also feature two Wayne Shorter covers - a lengthy take of Witch Hunt which is one of the highlights of the album, and a version of Masquelero which actually features both Shorter himself and Herbie Hancock.  It’s interesting that the group was able to find such a solid happy medium and that it works very well.  I mean, of course they’re all extremely talented artists, but most of them also have very specific, individual voices (Robert Glasper, for instance, is not someone I would have ever paired with Ambrose Akinmusire).  I think this is a really solid album, although maybe not quite ‘instant classic’ status.  Blue Note Records might not release nearly as many new recordings as they did in the 50s and 60s, but they still generally do a very good job of signing artists who are doing new and exciting things.
