My thoughts on Marcus

He was another love interest for Simon, so obviously there's an innate hatred of his character in that. But biases (mostly) aside, here are my thoughts on his character and his relationship with Simon.

So first, he was nice. He gave Simon a taste of what dating an ordinary boy would be like. When Simon started initiating sex, I'm glad that Marcus pushed him away.

So at first I was thinking, "Marcus is nice!" My impression from the pre-release information was that he would be nice to Simon, but ultimately couldn't compare to Simon's love for Wille. And I was right, mostly.

See, that was up until this conversation. (Episode 3, 22:30)

So Simon started to break up with him. But instead of accepting that, Marcus resisted. Simon didn't bend straight away, and kept making his intentions clear.

He couldn't have made it more obvious. Then, Marcus followed it with this:

And like, wtf. That was super unnecessary. And the implication that Simon could be anything like his dad is just, so out of nowhere? And the part that got me the most:

No, Marcus, you don't know that. You can't decide what's best for Simon whatsoever. And the contrast of Marcus acting like that with Wilhelm, who accepted Simon's wishes despite the fact it hurt him so much?? This whole conversation was so extremely uncomfortable and manipulative, where Simon clearly wanted to end things but Marcus convinced him against it. Plus, Simon looks so uncomfortable when Marcus pulls him into that hug!

Their relationship was doomed to fail from the start, considering the fact that Simon was still in love with Wilhelm. But argh, Marcus was less of the unfortunate rebound than I had anticipated.

And to be honest, at first I was quite uncomfortable during the Wilmon scenes, with the knowledge that Simon and Marcus were together. And I still am, but the reflection that Simon really did make his intentions clears it up at least a little.

And when Marcus called Simon out in episode 6, I think he was justified for it, despite his own character flaws. Simon made some pretty bad decisions this season himself. But, they're teenagers, they're humans, they're far from perfect. They're realistic and gritty. And isn't that what Young Royals is all about?

Anyway, bottom line is: Marcus sucks, Simon made some iffy choices, Wilmon will always be endgame. Thank you for reading.

I would really like to see a conversation (or even read a fic about it I'm not picky) where Wilhelm finds out more about Simon and Marcus. I think it would be interesting to see how Simon would talk about it, especially because I don't think that he sees some of Marcus's actions as manipulative in the way that we the audience do. I wonder how Wille would react to some of the things Marcus said to Simon. Pretty sure Wille also doesn't know the full extent of Simon's dad's situation either. So that whole scene with Marcus telling Simon he basically does know how to be in a relationship because of having a lack of a good father figure? That would be veeery interesting to get Wille's take on. I'd also love Wilmon discussing the extent of that relationship (if you can even call it that). Like how far did they go, was there more than just kissing? Would Wille be a little uncertain, wondering how he may have measured up to Marcus? Or is the fact that Simon chose *him* and he chose *Simon* enough to make him sure that Marcus could never measure up to *him*? Does Wille wonder if Marcus could give Simon things that he can't, especially after that locker room fight?

I just really want to know Wille's thoughts on Marcus after the events of S2E6.

Okay, but... it is not to shit on Marcus even more, because while he did bad things, I don't think he is all that bad, but what if he pursued Simon because of Simon's relationship with Wilhelm?

Hear me out.

When Simon tried to break things off, Marcus brings up the sex tape and Wilhelm, which indicates that Marcus didn't believe Wilhelm's statement. He then brings Wilhelm down, saying he won't hurt Simon like Wilhelm did. And it's not the only time that he shits on Wilhelm.

And when Wilhelm and Marcus first meet, Marcus seems nice, but there's that smirk and his comments that just rubs me the wrong way. It's a bit like "I get to have something that you want, but that you can't have".

And then, the day right after he told Simon "we can take it slow", Marcus comes to the rowing event and kisses Simon right in front of Wilhelm. Someone said it before, but it kinda feels like Marcus is claiming Simon in front of Wilhelm. And maybe it did that purposefully.

And there's the fact that he calls the kids at Hillerska "brats", that he tries very much to claim that he is "not like them".

I think Marcus was interested in Simon, because yeah he is cute and all, but also because being in a relationship with Simon would mean that he is "better than the Prince".

And that's why he insinuates that Simon is only interested in Wilhelm because he is a prince. We know that's not true, but Marcus doesn't know any better.

I’m insane actually and I don’t know if this was intentional at all or not but. Marcus is just so big.

He towers over Simon, his frame is stocky and bulky and he just demands to be seen no matter where he is. Seeing him with Simon felt wrong in many ways (he’s not Wilhelm, he’s a gaslighter/manipulator, he was just a rebound etc) but they aesthetically look wrong together too.

Simon is petite, he’s short, and small, and he fits perfectly in Wille’s arms. He looks like he was made to be in Wille’s arms. But with Marcus, he just looks so tiny. He looks like a little kid. But part of why this show is insane is because Simon didn’t rebound with someone who looked exactly like Wille. He instead chose someone whose presence could fill an entire room, whose loudness demanded to be heard and seen. It’s a bit of a “if Wille wants to hide me away then fine I’ll choose a guy that will show me off.”

But the other side of this is that Wilhelm’s natural inclination is to disappear. He’s a prince. Eyes have always followed him everywhere. He’s always been in the spotlight and at the center of attention. He always shrinks himself in to take up less space because he doesn’t want this. He never has. Simon is the only person who has ever made him feel normal. Who’s ever treated him like a person first and a prince second.

Marcus and Wille are complete and total polar opposites, not just in social standings, but in appearance too. It’s literally insane to me. This show is so insane. I really hope this made sense because I was definitely just rambling my thoughts.

I want to know what marcus's definition of beautiful is because up to the "I know you don't want to destroy something this beautiful" line their relationship consisted of a failed rebound hookup and them hanging out maybe three times. girl where is the beautiful
