Why were so many people overcome by bitterness on Valentines Day? Emilio wondered this as he wandered down a bustling side street. After all, this February 14th, he was very single. But Valentines Day was a day to celebrate love, wasn’t it? Emilio could appreciate and feel the joy of the love around him, even if he wasn’t currently feeling it himself. Besides, love was more than romantic and he hated the idea that those outside of relationships felt left out of Valentines Day.
These musings led him to the door of a florist, a smile breaking out over his features. His shift at the diner started in fifteen minutes, which would be enough time to buy some flowers for his co-workers and still walk the ten minutes it took to get to work from here. Pleased with his plan, he pushed the door open.
Nobody was at the cash register currently, but Emilio did hear some sounds coming from the back room so he figured someone would emerge soon. He busied himself examining the vast selection of flowers. Were roses too contrived? Should he pick some up for Esta and Gia? As he wandered, he heard footsteps and looked up. Someone had returned to the counter and Emilio couldn’t help staring a little longer than was socially acceptable.
This boy was cute, in a scruffy, well muscled, adorably sweet seeming way. His hair was purple, and he was smiling to himself as he checked his phone. Emilio scratched the back of his neck with his index finger, turning back to the flowers in the hopes that his flushed cheeks weren’t noticed. He really didn’t want to develop a crush on a boy who worked in a flower shop. It was really hard to find constant excuses to buy flowers. Why couldn’t he work at a bakery or something?
A ridiculous idea popped into his head, and Emilio grabbed several bouquets of roses before he lost his nerve. He headed over to the register and placed the six bouquets on the counter. He had come in here to buy only five. “Hey,” he said, flashing the boy a goofy grin. “Just these, thanks.”
