Maybe one day Dream gave up, and Nightmare used him to create their powerful child. But Shade was born sick and weak (because of incest) so «dad» abandoned him. But «mom» still loves Shade and blames Nightmare for all the misery he did to them both. So Shade became a pessimistic but cynic monster with the intention of protecting Dream.
