Maren Hassinger’s “Message from Malcolm” (1998) at Central Park North-110 St (2,3) station in #Manhattan honors #MalcolmX and consists of quotations from him within mosaic panels that line the stairway walls at the entrance and an upright wall on the station’s platform. Among the quotations are the words, “I believe in a society in which people can live like human beings on the basis of equality.”

@marenhassinger’s sculptural work can soon be seen in the exhibition “Steel Bodies,” opening June 9 at @socratespark in #Queens. Be sure to also hear Maren speak about #publicart during @ madsqparknyc’s 2022 Annual Symposium: Unearthing Public Art on June 3 at @svatheatre.

Maren Hassinger is an African American artist in New York known for sculpture, performance, and public art in which she uses natural and industrial materials. In 1973 she completed a Master of Fine Arts in fiber structure at UCLA. During her time in Los Angeles, Hassinger began to collaborate with Senga Nengudi — a collaborative relationship that has continued throughout their careers.

Art en route to Art in the Park - Maren Hassinger’s “Message from Malcolm” (1998) at Central Park North (110th Street) (2,3 train) honors Malcolm X writings. As the artist stated, “Malcolm X believed that we as African Americans have the power to determine our destinies. This station is a reminder of that truth." Just 15 blocks north of this station, Maren Hassinger’s “Monuments” installation is now on view in Marcus Garvey Park presented by The Studio Museum in Harlem.  Her eight sculptures respond to the park as a site of hope and equality. According to Hassinger, "Within nature, we are equal."

Four #MTAArts artists’ work can be seen in the newly opened exhibit “Sedimentations: Assemblage as Social Repair” at The 8th Floor gallery.  The show concerns artists who reuse artifacts of our existence to reinterpret the cycles of creation, consumption, and waste.  Included are Shinique Smith - Detail from “Mother Clara’s Garden” (2013) at Mother Clara Hale Bus Depot pictured here; Jean Shin at Lexington Ave.-63rd Street (Q,F) & Broadway LIRR station; Michael Kelly Williams at Intervale Ave. (5); Maren Hassinger at Central Park North-110th St. (3).
