During Women's History Month we are celebrating MTA Arts & Design women artists who are making history through their artistic practices. #WomenMakingHistoryMondays

Congratulations to artist Maren Hassinger on being awarded the CAA Advancing Art & Design esteemed Artist Award for a Distinguished Body of Works. For more than four decades, Maren Hassinger’s expansive artistic practice encompassing sculpture, installation, video, and performance has explored the relationship between nature and industry as well as the relationship to the body and surrounding environments. Her #MTAArts permanent mosaic artwork "Message from Malcolm" (1998) at the Central Park North-110 Street (3) station honors Malcolm X with quotations and symbols of power, leadership, and spiritual support. Hassinger said about the artwork, "Malcolm X believed that we as African Americans have the power to determine our destinies. This station is a reminder of that truth."

The dynamics of power in colonialization and migration are complex and nuanced and are often reflected in art across regions and time. Our panelists will delve into their own work dissecting art, power, and migration in their 15-minute talks, followed by an open forum for questions. . . This panel discussion is presented in collaboration with the #50StatesInitiative by @ForFreedoms. #ForFreedoms Federation encourages new forms of critical discourse. Their mission is to use art as a vehicle to build greater participation in #AmericanDemocracy. Since 2016, For Freedoms has produced exhibitions, town hall meetings, billboards, and public art to spur greater participation in #civiclife. This year, For Freedoms launched the 50 State Initiative, a new phase of programming from September through December 2018 during the lead-up to the midterm elections. Building off of the existing artistic infrastructure in the United States, For Freedoms has developed a network of artists and institutional partners who will produce nationwide public art installations, exhibitions, and local-community dialogues in order to inject nuanced, artistic thinking into public discourse.
