Blab: Three secrets they're keeping. {Evelyn}

1) Ev is technically an award winning Pianist. Ev was never able to match Margaret in academic achievements but she excelled in creative pursuits. As such Evelyn knows how to play the piano, the violin and can passably draw. All proper hobbies for a refined young Lady. Obviously she doesn’t practice ANY of them anymore but Elysia has the trophies from Ev’s stint in junior music competitions hanging around the music room as a reminder of better (and worse) times. With Kitty’s lazy, uncooperativeness they are the only material indications of achievement Elysia has for either of her daughters.

Evelyn is particularly resistant to talking about this or picking up music again due to some traumatic experiences but those you’ll have to learn about in RP, fam. ;P

2) Ev actually really likes kids. While she’s probably right in considering the idea that she and Markus will have children right away a terrible one she doesn’t find the idea of mothering his children as abhorrent as she lets on. If she worked on some of her issues she might even be a good mother. For now she’s a passable wine aunt for Margaret Aster’s trio of children. If that relationship was a little less fraught, she might even be around enough to be a favorite relative. She’s also not really bad with children by any means, but maybe not mature enough to be fully responsible as a caregiver.

3) Evelyn has spent her newfound agency in the wake of her father’s death actually doing charitable work. Under an assumed name of course. Ev puts a lot of work into her scandalous, party girl reputation. She can’t have people thinking she uses her nobility and privilege for the benefit of others.Being part of a family that still owns land in a dwindling kingdom she has a considerable amount of wealth. Considering that her father was a corrupt politician quite a bit of it is squirreled away. As she finds it, she’s been putting it to better use than Nathaniel Crestwood would have.

She’s even asked Margaret for a bit of help, though all of their interactions are fraught with baggage.

I expected this to reveal more of a “type” to my characters.

It mostly reveals that none of the Crestwood sisters are fit to be parents. This was kind of fun tho.

Margaret Aster doesn’t think she’s done anything wrong.

Objectively, Margaret is aware that she is cruel, she has difficulty relating to others because she has pretty much no empathy and that most of her relationships with others are built almost entirely on her ability to observe and emulate what behavior is expected of her. Rather than forming true emotional bonds I’d say the Margaret’s relationships and connections to others are largely based on manipulating other people’s feelings.

It’s not that she doesn't care about others. I would argue that Margaret actually cares quite a lot about others. She has a very strong sense of justice and in her own way she does love her husband and children. (Though whether or not she’s a good wife or mother is debatable.) She believes that her behavior is necessary because “good” people concerned with being good can’t always get the things that people need. It needs someone less concerned with being “good” to take down people that are “evil”.

She respected Reese because of her work ethic and ability to nurture and she recognizes that leaders like Reese are necessary, but she also thinks that people like Reese and Gregory and Evelyn need the support of ruthless people who get shit done while they’re off having feelings and taking care of people. Whether or not she’s truly correct in that respect is also debatable, though her lack of real empathy can sometimes make her attempts to manipulate others fail catastrophically.

Had Margaret’s mother not implored Nathaniel to send her daughter to school Margaret might have grown up to be a very different person. Nathaniel Crestwood saw no need to teach empathy to his children. Her father took the worst of Margaret’s traits and directed them at a future career in the Ministry. Nathaniel took pride in how cruel and ruthless she was and because this behavior brought his approval to a child that was largely rejected by the people around her...Well even children as willful and angry as Margaret still need some kind of approval from somewhere.

Arguably Margaret has improved in this respect because of both her interactions with the Danmars (William’s siblings reactions to her cruelty and William’s continuous and undeserved forgiveness) combined with the companionship of Gregory Aster and his parents in her late teens. For a child who was not kind by virtue of personality or guilt via empathy, was never taught to be kind or gifted with kindness before it took quite a lot to come to that realization.

As far as Margaret is concerned, she has already become as kind as she is interested in becoming.

(Margaret was fun because I introduced this very dark gray character as a helper to a guild that included several very black and white characters. As such I think that to this day many of them would defend her every action bc she’s “not that bad” whereas some others are pretty firmly convinced she was a bad guy all along and they’re probably still waiting for me to reveal her even though we don’t even RP together anymore.)

RATIONALITY

You like clarity and intelligent simplicity and you get frustrated at messy thinking. This can make you seem unreasonably pushy to some, but it is actually a virtue: you are motivated by a horror at pointless effort and a longing for precision and insight into how things and people work. Your ability to synthesize and bring order is essential in producing thinking which is truly helpful.

AGGRESSION

One part of your character is anger in all its forms: frustration, outrage – and when anger is suppressed – bitterness, grumpiness, and bodily aches. Fundamentally, frustration comes from hope: you get upset because you expect your life will be more than a valley of tears. One way to deny aggression is to direct it inwards, as self-criticism. But you’re at your best when you acknowledge anger, and act it out clearly and in a focused way, with honor.

ORDERLINESS

You love it when everything is neat and tidy: when there is a proper way of doing things, and you can tick things off the to-do list and know where everything is. So others, at times, are to you unbearably sloppy and messy. And you run into things that can’t be ordered (a child, a partner, a colleague at work) which drives you slightly nuts. But your desire for order is a good one when it is focused where it is needed and when you’re okay with a bit of mess.

Margaret Aster had furnished her office the usual pictures of her children, bright colors and homey accents. Her bookshelves were lined with self help books and other coffee table level reading. Somewhere there was a “Live. Laugh. Love” placard. For some reason visitors of her office often fell for this very deliberate decorating theme when someone who did the least bit of research would understand clearly that Gregory was more of a house wife than she would ever be. Yet, it did the job.

It provided the gauntlet with which Margaret could study who her visitors were and how well they paid attention. Who would notice the rebound necromancy tomes hidden beside Chicken Soup for the Soul? Who would see the random, low level artifacts she had on display beside bits of sea glass with motivational phrases on them? Who would look at her, pristine and proper, and discount her as more of a mesmer than a necromancer? Who would see all this stereotypical, rich housewife paraphernalia instead of a powerful witch to be feared?

She drummed her fingers silently on the desk as she stared at the door. Margaret didn’t have an unkind face. Her brow was soft and her lips naturally upturned ever so slightly. You could even say that face was kindly but it was not warm. She neither smiled nor frowned but merely watched as the time ticked closer to her appointment with a look of polite indifference.

It wasn’t often that Margaret was given a fresh recruit. He must be new if no one had told him of her reputation. Or else he was ambitious. Either way the new scholar in question was likely to be quite interesting. She needed a new one. She had already broken the spirits of her current subordinates so only Penny was left to provide day to day excitement.

The Sandford Cabal had been detrimental to her career trajectory but in that respect she did miss it.

When the knock on her door finally came she beckoned her guest in folded her hands across her desk.

“Take a seat, Scholar. I’m Archon Margaret Aster. I understand you are looking for a position in my lab?”
