The Last Plantaganets

I'm this day in history the 14th if August 1473 Margaret Pole was born. She was born the daughter of George Plantaganet, 1st Duke of Clarence and Isabelle Neville. She was the second birn child but she and her younger brother Edward woukd be the only children to survive infancy out of their mothers 4 births.

In 1487 she was married to Richard Pole, a man who'd fought on the side of Henry VII in the Battle.of Bosworth Feild. She would serve under 2 Tudor kings and even raised Princess Mary Tudor the first Queen Regnant of England.(Mary I. Daughter of Henry VIII and Catalina de Aragon)

She is a tragic figure in history as she had a chaotic childhood being orphaned at a young age and her eventual death wasn't of natural causes but a botched execution in 1540.

To this day she remains a strong and pittied character in history for the troubles the world threw at her. Through everything she kept her head high and did her duty until the very end.

Last White Rose Meets the Block

On the 27th if may 1541 Lady Margaret Pole met her end. She was executed by beheading at the age of 70. She was the daughter of Isabelle Neville and George Plantaganet, Duke of Clarence. She's the only girl to survive of her mother's 4 births. She lost her entire family young, she actually raised Princess Mary as she was her lady. She and her family were accused of treason and executed killing off the final living white roses in England. It's said she was terrified and fled from the alexuecutioner. Witnesses report the executioner was drunk and botched it hitting her back numerous times. She died terrified under the orders of her secind Cousin King Henry VIII

Margaret Pole: The Woman Henry VIII Feared Most

While Henry VIII is often remembered for his clashes with powerful men such as Thomas More and Cardinal Wolsey, one of his greatest perceived threats was a woman—Margaret Pole, Countess of Salisbury. As the daughter of George, Duke of Clarence, and niece of Kings Edward IV and Richard III, Margaret was one of the last surviving members of the House of York, giving her a strong claim to the English throne.

Despite remaining loyal to the Tudor monarchy for many years, Margaret's royal blood made her a constant source of suspicion. Her son, Reginald Pole, became one of Henry VIII's fiercest critics after the king broke with the Catholic Church. Enraged, Henry accused the Pole family of treason, even though evidence against Margaret herself was weak.

In 1539, at nearly 70 years old, Margaret was imprisoned in the Tower of London. Two years later, she was executed on Henry VIII's orders in one of the most controversial killings of his reign. Contemporary accounts describe the elderly countess refusing to place her head on the execution block, forcing the inexperienced executioner to strike multiple blows before she died.

Margaret Pole's tragic fate demonstrated that even age, loyalty, and noble status offered no protection from Henry VIII's growing paranoia. Today, she is remembered as both a victim of Tudor politics and a symbol of resistance against one of England's most formidable monarchs.

27th May 1541, execution of Margaret Pole, 8th Countess of Salisbury, and daughter of George, Duke of Clarence, brother of kings Edward IV and Richard III. One of the last survivors of the Plantagenet dynasty after the Wars of the Roses, she was arrested for treason upon the orders of Henry VIII, and kept in the Tower of London for two and a half years. One account upon her execution states that it was performed badly, with her claiming her innocence, and refusing to place her head on the block. The executioner then attempted to behead her, with her head and shoulders hacked to pieces. Margaret was buried in the chapel within the Tower of London, the same site where Anne Boleyn’s body had been placed on the 19th May 1536. Her father had also been executed at the Tower of London in 1478, for ‘unnatural, loathly treasons’. A rumour arising after his execution stated he was drowned in a butt of Malmsey wine, as his body was later found with his head still attached. This story is also represented in Shakespeare’s ‘Richard III’. Further supporting this historical rumour, is a portrait thought to be of Margaret Pole, showing a bracelet upon her right hand with a wine barrel charm upon it. On this day in history, the 14th of August 1473. She was the only surviving daugjter of Isabel Neville and George Plantaganet, Duke of Clarence. She was born in the midst of a civil war between the royal houses of York and Lancaster. She was born into the House of York as her paternal grandparents were Richard Plantaganet, 3rd Duke of York and Grandmother Cicily Neville. She was made a famous figure in history due to her execution on the 27th of May 1541 at the age of 67. She had a troubled life for a member of royalty. Her mother died in 1476 when Margaret was only 3. It is not really known what Isabel died of but George insisted she was poisoned and insisted on the suspect he'd accused be hanged. During the reign of her uncle Edward IV she and her younger brother Edward Plataganet, the Earl of Warwick lived in Warwick Castle. During the reign of her other uncle Richard III she was placed in Sheriff Hutton Castle in Yorkshire. During the reign of Henry VII the first Tudor king who won the crown at the Battle of Bosworth on the 22nd Of August 1485, she was married to a knight called Sir Richard Pole in November of 1487. Together they had 5 children; Henry Pole, 1st Baron of Montagu who was born around 1492. He married Jane Neville and had 4 children. He was executed in the Tower of London on the 9th of January 1539 on the charges of Treason against the king Henry VIII. Arthur Pole was born between 1493 and 1499. He married Jane Lewkenor in October of 1522. The couple had at least 4 children. It's not known exactly when Arthur died but it theorised he died of Sweating Sickness in 1528. Reginold Pole was born in 1500. He never married as he devoted his life to the Catholic Church. He was made a Cardinal in 1537. He was a supporter of Catalina De Aragon the first wife of Henry VIII and the mother of Mary Tudor the future Mary I. This led to his family's downfall after Henry broke with Rome. He was sent to the Holy Roman Emperor to organise an ban against England. The sort of countermeasure he had himself warned Henry was possible. Due to Reginald's actions Henry VIII took his family to the tower on harges of Treason. His brother and mother were executed 2 years apart. He died in November of 1558. Geoffrey Pole was born between 1501 and 1502. He had supported Catalina de Aragon and the Catholic Church. He was arrested along with his brother and mother in 1538. He was pardoned after he attempted to commit suicide twice. This led to his mental breakdown. He went to his brother in Rome and begged for forgiveness. He was then sent to Flaunders wjere he was seen to by Cardinal Leige and given a salary of 40 crowns a month. He lived there till the reign of Mary I began in 1553. He died in 1558 before his brother Reginald's burial. He left behind 5 children. 2 boys and 3 girls. 2 of which were married off and one a nun. His widow was buried beskde him upon her death. Ursala Pole, Baroness Stafford was born in 1504. She was Margaret's only daughter. At the age of 14 she was married off to Henry Stafford, 1st Baron Staforrd together they had 12 children. Margaret lost her husband in 1505 when her youngest child was only an infant. She and her husband were the wards of Arthur Tudor till his sudden death in 1502. She never remarried and lived happily with her children and grandchildren until her arreat in 1538. She seen her oldest son Henry Pole executed in the Tower on botched Charges. Then 2 years later she followed. Margaret Pole, Countess of Salisbury was executed at the age of 67 on the 27th of May 1541 at the Tower of London. She was made Blessed Margaret in the 1850's by the Catholic Church.
