Death of Mary Boleyn, The Forgotten Sister of Anne Boleyn

On 19 July 1543, Mary Boleyn, the English noblewoman and sister of Anne Boleyn, died at around the age of 43 or 44. Born around 1499 to Sir Thomas Boleyn and Elizabeth Howard, Countess of Wiltshire, Mary was raised in one of the most influential families at the Tudor court. Her early life placed her close to the center of English politics and royal intrigue.

Mary Boleyn is best remembered for her rumored relationship with King Henry VIII before her sister Anne became queen. Although the exact details of their relationship remain uncertain, Mary’s position at court gave the Boleyn family valuable royal connections. She later married William Carey, a gentleman of the royal household, and after his death married William Stafford, a soldier and gentleman, in a match that reportedly displeased her family.

Unlike her sister Anne, who became one of the most powerful women in England before her dramatic execution in 1536, Mary lived a quieter life away from the political spotlight. She survived the fall of the Boleyn family and spent her final years in relative obscurity. Her death in 1543 marked the end of the life of a woman whose connections helped shape one of the most dramatic periods in Tudor history.

Death of Henry Algernon Percy: The Earl Connected to Anne Boleyn’s Early Life

On June 29, 1537, Henry Algernon Percy, 6th Earl of Northumberland, died and was buried at Hackney parish church. Percy is remembered in Tudor history for his youthful relationship with Anne Boleyn before her marriage to King Henry VIII. Their romance was reportedly serious, but it ended when Cardinal Thomas Wolsey intervened and prevented a possible marriage between them.

A powerful northern nobleman, Percy later served the crown and remained connected to the political world of Henry VIII’s reign. His final will named the King as Supervisor and appointed Edward Fox, Bishop of Hereford, and Thomas Cromwell as executors, showing his close ties to the Tudor government during a dramatic period of religious and political change.

Thomas Boleyn: The Man Who Stepped Over the Bodies of His Children to Reach Power

Thomas Boleyn, Earl of Wiltshire and father of Anne Boleyn, remains one of the most controversial figures of the Tudor court. A skilled diplomat and ambitious nobleman, he rose from a respectable courtier to one of the most powerful men in England — but his climb to greatness was forever tied to the tragic downfall of his own family.

Boleyn’s greatest opportunity came through his children. His daughters Anne and Mary entered the royal court, where their beauty, intelligence, and charm attracted the attention of Henry VIII. While Mary became the king’s mistress, it was Anne who transformed the Boleyn family’s destiny. Thomas supported Anne’s refusal to become merely another royal affair, allowing her relationship with Henry to become a political crisis that would reshape England.

Critics have long portrayed Thomas as a man who sacrificed his children for his own advancement — a father who pushed them toward the throne but could not protect them when the crown turned against them. Whether he was ruthless or simply trapped in the brutal politics of Tudor England remains debated by historians.

Thomas Boleyn’s story is a reminder of the dangers of ambition at the Tudor court. He reached the heights of power, but the price of that success was the loss of the very children who carried his dreams.
