“I wish I was the one in your arms.” - Margina
She’s tired. Exhausted really. Eight performances a week is nothing to snuff at, and spending a couple hours seated across from her ex isn’t exactly how Quinn foresaw occupying her day off. But looking to put together a group of stars that had transitioned from stage to screen and vice versa for a round table discussion, The Hollywood Reporter had called and it was an opportunity she couldn’t pass.
Of course at the time of her agreement Quinn hadn’t been aware that Rachel would also be in attendance, but as she politely shakes the hand of the moderator and offers a few smiles to the minimal crew, Quinn knows that any prior knowledge wouldn’t have changed her commitment. She’s an actor after all and with the past two hours as evidence, can play cordial and polite, even thoughtfully reminisce and participate in an exchange of nostalgic memories of their shared past involving the show that launched their West Coast careers. No one else but the girl across from her recognized the tightness of her smile or the dullness of her eyes.
Though maybe that’s why Quinn hears a familiar – even after all these months – clearing of a throat as she scans the missed texts on the face of her phone and digs for her car keys. Rachel always knew when she wore one mask or another, so when Quinn turns, heels clicking twice on the wood of the studio floor, she allows the one she’s wearing now to dissolve into the air. In accordance with being both physically weary and mentally drained, Quinn’s shoulders sag, any fight that was present when she stood in her driveway too long ago and for many of the weeks after is gone, and so is the fight she used to have for them, for a future together.
Eyebrows rise at Rachel’s softly spoken words, and Quinn doesn’t know if she’s referencing a certain scene from her show, the last set of candids released two days ago – even if they were snapped over a month ago – featuring her arms wrapped around her latest gal pal, or some ghost of their relationship past that resurfaced thanks to the round table talk. And really it can be any of those options, or it can be none. It honestly doesn’t matter because Quinn can’t allow it to.
Her smile’s not even sad, it truly is just tired, when Quinn sighs and takes a single step forward to ensure her words stay only between them.
“We made our choices, Rachel, and I wasn’t yours.”

TEXT MESSAGES TO RACHEL BERRY
QUINN: And I read in last week’s People that you’re head over heels in love with /him/. QUINN: I think that means we’re even, don’t you?

PRE-BREAKUP: WHO HOLDS…
...the umbrella when it rains?
Initially, there’s lots of running through the rain for Rachel and Quinn. From trailers to set, cars to apartments. but Rachel’s ‘boyfriend’ holds her umbrella.
...the popcorn at the cinema?
On the few actual outings they had before a movie night meant Rachel was going out to be papped or that they were renting something and staying in, Quinn’s always been more concerned with holding Rachel’s hand than she has been for any potential buttery goodness.
...the ice cream cone when they share?
Quinn, and she makes sure to never get sorbet or dairy-free so that she actually gets to keep her cone to herself regardless of how much Rachel pouts. Then there are the nights when Quinn gets to have a whole pint of So Delicious on her own because Rachel’s not even around to share it.
...the remote when they sit down to watch a movie?
Quinn. Unless the film is particularly gripping, Rachel often loses interest at various points because her phone keeps buzzing or there are scripts to review or sides to learn and if she was in control of the remote, the playback would constantly be stopped and rewound to fill in the gaps.
...the basket when they go shopping?
There’s only two joint (and papped) shopping trips before their teams step in. Each of those two times, Quinn pushed the cart as Rachel loaded it up. Since the team mandate, Quinn only needs to use a basket since she’s supposedly shopping for one.
...the door on dates?
What dates? They’re not dating. They’re just good friends.
...the others hand most often?
Quinn used to, but now she sees too many photos of Rachel holding his hand, so…
...the camera when they take pictures together?
It used to be Quinn with her longer arms and slight height advantage, but now they can’t have photos on their phones in case anything is hacked or a device lost or stolen.
POST GETTING BACK TOGETHER: WHO HOLDS…
...the umbrella when it rains?
Quinn, and her other arm is securely wrapped around Rachel’s shoulders.
...the popcorn at the cinema?
Movie nights are either premieres where they walk the carpet hand in hand, or are strictly an at home date night that usually involves an obscene amount of take out or cooking some elaborate new dish together.
...the baby when it cries?
Quinn. She’s got a way with her girls and just knows how to calm them both.
...the ice cream cone when they share?
Quinn. And she happily shares.
...the remote when they sit down to watch a movie?
Quinn only presses play once both their phones are silenced and stashed away.
...the basket when they go shopping?
They frequent farmer’s markets together and Quinn (and her guns) always carry their reusable bags.
...the door on dates?
Quinn, accompanied with the biggest smile on her face.
...the others hand most often?
Quinn holds Rachel’s hand and Rachel wraps her other hand around Quinn’s arm or bicep.
...their breath upon seeing the other on their wedding day?
Their relationship has always done better with less people involved, so they actually have a private ceremony on a getaway to Mexico. There’s not really a gasp that morning when Quinn rolls over in bed and wraps her arms around her fiancee and soon-to-be wife, but just quiet contentment that they’re finally going to take that next step together. A week after they’re back in LA, they throw a party to celebrate with family and friends.
...the camera when they take pictures together?
Quinn, because her arms, even with one wrapped around her wife, are still longer.
send me a ship.
