Maria Graham: Uplift and Uproar
Maria, Lady Callcott by Sir Thomas Lawrence, oil on canvas 1819. NPG 954. Maria Graham married Augustus Wall Callcott in 1827, and became Lady Callcott when Augustus was knighted in 1837. Copyright National Portrait Gallery, used here under their CC-BY-NC-ND licence.
Maria Graham recorded tectonic uplift following an earthquake in Chile in 1822 -- more than 10 years before Charles Darwin!
Her observations made her the first woman to be published in the Transactions of the Geological Society, and were a key piece of evidence in Lyell's Principles of Geology.
She also knew how to fight her corner -- and WIN!
