A little thread I wrote on twitter about Dragon Age and my experiences with how a single ablest comment sent me down a road towards creating more autistic characters out of spite and how disability is shown in the games. I hope you like it. 

And a big thanks to @anotherdayforchaosfay @thesecondseal @sluah and all the other amazing folks I met because of the games. The fandom can be a dumpster fire a lot of the time but it is awesome to find these amazing people on here.

Meet my Inquisitor, Mariah Lavellan. My baby got brought to life by @midnigtartist and I’m over the moon with how this came out. I am still in happy tears with how this came out. From the costume to her Snoopy smile, I cannot recommend this artist enough! Definitely commission her if you want a character done.

My Mariah is a sweet girl who loves dancing (Her mother was a famous dancer from Rivain), nugs, and chocolate. She gets very angry if someone insults her friends and family (she cussed out the fear demon for insulting Vivianne). She's not on the best of terms with her clan. She loves tinkering with traps. And she's autistic. Introverted, caring, and believes in learning from ones mistakes. Hates snails and being at the winter palace longer than needed.

7/10: Avira isn’t on the best terms with her clan, either, so they could certainly commiserate over that. Mariah would be a breath of fresh air for Avira, the type of friend she would seek out to get away from her stresses for a while and focus on happy, lighthearted things: chocolate, wine, laughing music, and dancing. Avira is good enough at reading people’s nonverbal cues that she would quickly grow to be mindful of her sensory needs. However, Avira might be wary of burdening her with her innermost problems and fears, so while they would likely be friendly, it is far less likely they would be close confidantes.

I think she would be flattered. Her brother? I think would be a little put off at first but over time would be relieved (He acted as her parent and brother growing up). And I think the image of Edmond glaring bloody murder at whoever calls her names while she smiles oblivious is a fun image. But she can handle her self quite well. She’d be a “hold Benny for me while I turn this jerk into a pin cushion” kind of gal. Being around the folks in the Inquisition helped her with that.

2. WHAT IS YOUR REAL NAME?

I don’t understand. That is my real name. *Shouts to Varric* Varric, what do they mean by that?

3. DO YOU KNOW WHY YOU WERE CALLED THAT?

Mama was a dancer from a troupe in Rivian and was part of a production that had this song about the names of the elements. I was named after the wind part of the song. (They Call the Wind Mariah from Paint Your Wagon for reference.)

4. ARE YOU SINGLE OR TAKEN?

I don’t want to answer that. Sorry.

5. HAVE ANY ABILITIES OR POWERS?

I can knit! When we were still in Haven, one of the ladies was nice enough to teach me when I saw her do it. I can dance pretty, too. Not as good as my brother or as well as Mama did, but I’ve been told that I dance like her from a lot of people. Oh, you meant my specialty! *Members from the inner circle chuckling* I’m a rouge archer and artificer. I can make traps that look like people to distract anyone trying to hurt my friends.

Dark Brown. My brother has hazel green. They’re prettier.

My brother Alwin, and all of the people I know from the Inquisition. They’re part of the clan! Oh, and Benny! (Her nug plushie)

I don’t like my handwriting. I’m still learning, but I feel that it still looks awful.

I guess I’ve already mentioned that, but I do like playing with the da’len around Skyhold. The Iron Bull and the Chargers and I have a tradition now where we send stuffed nugs flying. Cullen and Cassandra won three times in a row so far!

*Balls her fist* I don’t want to talk about that right now.

Yes.

I never thought about that. I’ll ask my friends after this.

16. NAME YOUR WORST HABITS.

Um. Everyone says that I’m too hard on myself. Being Dim Minded (Author’s Note: I am looking into what autistics are called in the DA universe. When I find it, I’ll edit this accordingly) causes me to feel like I have to play catch up with everyone else. I tend to hurt myself when I get really upset.

Yes. Ms. Vivienne, Josephine, Lelianna, Cullen, *continues to list off who she looks up to. In the background, the inner circle and her brother smile*

Bisexual? I guess?

19. DO YOU GO TO SCHOOL?

When I was younger, Mama taught me and Ally how to do the dances she did. But I never went to school. Then with the Inquisition I started to learn how to read and write (Still can’t seem to write very well.). Josie, Lelianna, Dorian, and Ms. Vivienne taught me how to act when I have to go visit important people. Cullen and Bull taught me how to fight. Varric taught me and Cole how to play Wicked Grace. Sera helps me with my archery and she’s got a prank war going on with Cullen. And Solas-*pauses* um..

20. DO YOU EVER WANT TO MARRY AND HAVE KIDS ONE DAY?

*Alwin and the others signal to the interviewer to change the question*

There’s this one boy from a noble family who drew me a picture of me and him riding a griffon. It’s really cool! I keep that at my desk and it makes me smile. I sent him a griffon plushie as a thank you gift. His family came to the flying nug games we held a while ago. We even got to have a chance to send his griffon flying!

22. WHAT ARE YOU MOST AFRAID OF?

Being a burden to others.

23. WHAT DO YOU USUALLY WEAR?

My hunting gear when we travel. But when I’m at Skyhold, I like to wear this fur jacket that Ms. Sun-Hair gifted me. I like how it feels, and it’s very warm. Ms. Vivienne also likes it when I wear dresses. They’re pretty, but I don’t think that I do them justice.

*Nods*

Really good! Cookie makes these tasty pies with chicken and then there’s this pie with pumpkin and chocolate...

Bull’s hot cocoa that he gets imported. I’m not allowed to have alcohol.

For flowerbabytrevelyan: Best Nug Friends

A little idea that stemmed from the OC Kiss week and @flowerbabytrevelyan‘s little story about her quizzie getting a nug plushie. I am not sure if I got Evie right, so if I didn’t please let me know. Hope you like it! 

Evie belongs to flowerbabytrevelyan. Mariah is my OC.

It had been a few weeks since she met Evie and became fast friends with the sweet human. She loved her gift of the Orleasian chocolate “kisses” and her nug, Benny. She even let her wear that pretty crown! Mariah couldn’t wait to spend time with her new friend. She and her brother Alwin had returned from a clanmate’s wedding and she hoped to tell Evie all about it. Alwin was already walking to find Cassandra. It made her smile to see her brother so happy. He practically floated when it came to the Seeker. 

When she reached the gardens, she sat down and pulled Benny out from her knapsack and hummed to herself. Out of the corner of her eye, she saw a figure walking towards her. She turned to see who it was and hid Benny just in case it was someone who didn’t know her. There were still many who would make fun of her for having her stuffed nug around her. 

To her relief, it was exactly who she was hoping to see. The purple flower crown set atop of the woman’s head and her features made Mariah stand up. She had a small bag with her

“Miss Evie!” She waived to the human. “I’m so happy to see you again! How are you? I wanted to tell you about the wedding Ally and I went to. Oh! I also brought Benny with me again it you want to hold him.”

Mariah took a breath and realized that she was rambling. She blushed and picked up her nug.

“I’m doing well! I wanted to show you something, too! Cullen gave me something recently.” Evie said as they both sat down.

“He did? What is it?” Mariah excitedly said as she hugged Benny.

Evie something out of her bag. When Mariah saw it, she squealed. A nug! A nug like Benny!

“It’s so cute, Miss Evie! What’s it’s name?” She cried. “And it has a flower crown like yours!”

“Her name is Cora. Isn’t she adorable?” Evie beamed with pride. 

Mariah nodded as she bounced happily in place. Her friend has a nug plushie now, too!

“She is!” Mariah replied.

Her new best friend has a nug plushie. Best day ever, in her opinion.

And that’s it! It’s not the best that I can come up with, but I’m exhausted from photo dumping and this was super cute and fun to write.

Valentine’s Angst.

All Hearts Day was in full swing at Skyhold. Couples could be seen giving their loved ones gifts. The smell of chocolate permeated the air. Even children were running around trying to see if anyone would give them sweets. Everyone in the Inner Circle was happy to receive a brief reprieve from the daily grind. Alwin was with Cassandra for a romantic dinner. Everyone, it seemed, had plans.

           Mariah did her best to occupy herself during the day. She made her rounds; greeting dignitaries in the morning, speaking with her advisors after that, playing with the children and giving out sweets with Bull, Sera, and the Chargers, and tea with Vivienne and Dorian in the afternoon. It helped keep her mind off of things that she didn’t want to think about. But once that was over and done with, she noticed everyone had plans after that. Except her.

           She was holed up in her room trying to block out the sounds from outside. With nothing to keep her mind busy, the thoughts that she tried to keep at bay were now rushing at her with full force. The memories of her beloved played out as vividly as the day she experienced them. Their first kiss in the Fade, conversations about their people, dancing at the Winter Palace, the awkward conversation with her brother Alwin, and…

           Mariah had to force that last thought the only way she knew how. Grabbing Benny the Nug of her bed, she walked over to a dark corner of the room and sat down. She sat down on the cold floor trying not to think about that night. People said that she needed to be strong. He said that, too. He also told her how beautiful she was. She shook her head. Why did she have to be reminded of all of this now? Solas was gone and she didn’t know why.

           “No, Solas. Don’t go. I love you!”

           “Please, Vhenan.”

           “Is it because I won’t remove my vallislin? Because I drank from the Well? I know that you’re upset about that, but-”

           “It’s not that, Vhenan. I-”

“Is it because I’m a Dullard? I’m trying not to be, I swear! I thought that the Well would fix that. But it didn’t! Please, Solas, what did I do wrong?”

“What? No! Never that!”

“Then what is it? Why?”

“I…can’t. In another world-”

“Then why not this one?”

Her memory after Solas leaving her there was a blur at best. When she returned to Skyhold, from what the others told her, she was a mess. Her clothes were dirty, hair tangled, and unable to speak. They tried to get her to her room, but she freaked out. All she did remember was waking up underneath her bed clutching; tears staining her face and Benny’s head. Alwin and the others had tried to see what was wrong, but she regressed so badly that she could only manage communicating by hand signals that she and her brother used.

No, she thought to herself. She would not let that play out in her head again. She balled her hand into a fist and started to hit her thigh. If one pain could cancel out another, then it was worth it. Everyone was happily enjoying the night. But not her.

She tightened her hold on Benny and cried herself to sleep.

For Sluah and Slugette

This is the little text that I wrote for Mariah’s reaction to Heart and Soul written by @slugette and @sluah. I would love to expand on this when I have the time. But for now, here’s the text. Hope you like it!

Mariah Lavellen doesn't know what to say to make things easier for the poor man. Words of comfort weren't her strong point and would make things worse. But she finds some blankets, a handkerchief, and her comfort plushed nug to give to him. She sits down near him, giving him enough space out of respect. "Don't hold your grief in. My love taught me that. He's gone, too. Hold Benny." She tells him, pointing to the stuffed nug. "I'm sitting here until you feel better or until he wakes up."
