Today I’m going to be doing a small lesson on how you can tell people what you can and cannot do
Firstly, remove -다 from the end of the verb
Then, all you have to do is add -(으)ㄹ 수 있다 to the end of the verb instead
Use -을 수 있다 following a consonant and -ㄹ 수 있다 following a vowel
I can speak English
I can sing a little
I can cook the food
I can look for it
There are two ways of saying “I cannot” in 한국어 and they’re both very easy.
For the first way, follow all the same steps as you did when saying “I can” but instead, add -(으)ㄹ 수 없다 to the verb. It’s as simple as that!
I can’t speak Korean
I can’t go to the office today
However, this way of saying “I can’t” isn’t actually used very often in Korean speech.
The second way I’m about to show you is more commonly used when talking.
For this second method, all you have to do is add “뭇” before the verb.
Remember, if the verb ends in 하다 (e.g. 공부하다), you put it before the -하다 part (공부 못 하다)
I can’t eat spicy food
I can’t meet my friend tomorrow
I’m sick so I can’t go to school tomorrow
I hope this lesson was useful! I think being able to say “I can” and “I cannot” is super useful to know and can give you lots of extra things to talk about!
Disclaimer: I am not at all fluent in Korean so there may be mistakes in my posts, and I apologise for that. This is simply a place for me to track and reinforce my own learning, and maybe help some other people along the way.
