A monthlong extravaganza that featured delegations from more than 50 countries, it has been described as the most important Black cultural event of the twentieth century—the high-water mark of a pan-African spirit unmatched before or since. There were concerts and colloquia, film screenings, art shows, and even a regatta. Wole Soyinka lectured, Miriam Makeba sang, and Jayne Cortez denounced global capitalism in verse. Nigeria’s oil boom financed the construction of a national stadium and a dedicated festival village, where guests from across the continent and its diaspora formed lasting bonds. For Marilyn Nance, then a 23-year-old photographer from Brooklyn, it was an opportunity to connect with her roots that was infinitely more exciting than the travails of Kunta Kinte. Must-read. ⁠@siddharthamitter profiles 'Last Day in Lagos' photographer @marilyn.nance with editor @oluremi.onabanjo in today's @nytimes⁠ ⁠ "Hers is the deepest individual image archive to have emerged from FESTAC ’77 — a major contribution on those grounds alone, but also a long-overdue focus on the early work of an important Black photographer who herself has only recently earned proper institutional notice. (Images from subsequent projects have appeared recently in the “Greater New York” exhibition at @momaps1 and “The Dirty South,” organized by the @vmfamuseum )⁠ ⁠ In Lagos, Nance brought her own cameras and film, and moved as she pleased.
