U.S. Housing and Urban Development Secretary Ben Carson visited Mariners Inn — a shelter and substance abuse treatment center for homeless men in Detroit. He visited Mariners, located across the street from Little Caesars Arena, because it receives HUD money — though the amount it receives has decreased $400,000 over the last four years, according to Carina Jackson, Mariners' chief operating officer. After the tour, Carson met with the Mariners board, focusing on the opioid epidemic and funding issues. Carson asked whether Mariners — which would like more federal money — has partnerships with businesses. It does. "There's a lot more money in the private sector than in the government," Carson said. "If we continue to accumulate debt at the rate that we are right now, by the year 2048 .... every penny the government makes will be spent on servicing the debt, which won't leave ... money for any program, including military."
