For those angry at Sakurai for not putting Geno in Smash Ultimate (That we know of), I feel I must remind you that Square-Enix made three, fucking THREE goddamn Mario Basketball games, and not ONCE did they use any of the Mario RPG characters they’ve been sitting on the rights to for years in there.
But they had plenty of space to fill it up with bullshit Final Fantasy cameo-characters! Because that series hasn’t been overexposed to fucking death!
So, if you want somebody to blame for Geno and the broader SMRPG cast’s neglect...
Found some GameCube rarities and some of the best DS games ever made thanks to Half Price Books and Disc Replay
Mario Hoops 3-on-3 for the Nintendo DS turns 19 today in North America! 🏀🎮
I want to talk about Mario Hoops 3-on-3
Please talk about Mario Hoops to me ;___; That game is such an underrated gem and I have fond memories of playing it when I was younger...
I think that out of all the Mario spin-offs, Mario Hoops is sadly overshadowed by the community. That game deserves a lot of attention.
One aspect of the game that I especially really love is the music. The song in that game is such a banger, but what especially stuck to my mind even up to now has to be the character select screen music. I remember the first time I heard that song when I was younger, my brain was PERMANENTLY ALTERED BECAUSE OF HOW GOOD A CHARACTER SELECT SCREEN SONG IS.
Also speaking of the music, the composer for Mario Hoops, Masayoshi Soken, would later be the composer for Final Fantasy XIV and XVI.
YES. THAT'S RIGHT. To all my friends here who play FFXIV, the composer for that game also worked on Mario Hoops.
And while I'm on the topic of Final Fantasy, I find it funny that Mario Hoops of all things was my introduction to the Final Fantasy series. Real talk, I'm not the only person who thought that the Ninja, White Mage, Black Mage, Moogle, and Cactuar were Mario characters, eh?
White Mage especially. I thought that she was one of the Super Mario princesses. Nope, she's a Final Fantasy character, not a Mario princess.
And as for the artwork, I really love the unique, stylized artwork of the game.
Today I learned that the illustrator for Mario Hoops is Gen Kobayashi! If that name sounds familiar to you, that's the same person who did the artwork for the TWEWY series! YES.
Okay no wonder why I wanted Neku to appear in a Mario Hoops revival LOL
Jokes aside, Gen Kobayashi's art range and resume is quite insane because what do you mean that's the same person who worked on the artwork for these games-
Someone with programming skills needs to get their hands on Mario Hoops 3-on-3 and mod it until it’s Penn & Teller’s Shithead Basketball.
