Mario Marathon 2018: To The Moon And Back
June came and went with no sign of a Mario Marathon this year.
Well, maybe not NO sign as there was a website update that kicked off an avalanche of speculation but no official announcement of anything.
Well today the official announcement finally came!
This year’s Mario Marathon begins July 20th!
But it’s different this year. This year they’re only going to play one game: Super Mario Odyssey.
It’s the Super Mario Odyssey Marathon.
Their quest is to get all 880 moons in the game.
I got the game on launch day, played it for like an hour and promptly forgot about it so I have no idea how easy or difficult this quest is but it seems the Marathon is to begin Friday night and end Sunday night.
Although we’ve heard that before.
I don’t want to get anyone’s hopes up but these things tend to grow beyond their initial scope. The donations roll in, schedules get changed. Who knows?
The first Mario Marathon raised over $11,000 and lasted 57 hours over the course of a weekend. This Marathon is slated to last 56 hours over a weekend so it looks like they’re getting back to basics.
But they have a much larger audience now.
And they’ve built some amazing infrastructure behind the event from React Time to the Passport System to Code Mario.
But they also have a lot more competition now. When they started, streaming video games wasn’t really a thing, certainly not in the mainstream. The Mario Marathon is part of what brought it into the mainstream.
Mario Marathon 4 and 5 both brought in over $112,000 each – how well will they do this year? Well that’s up to you.
