“Heeseung, where are you?”

You mumble nervously, to no one. Impatiently waiting for his arrival at the airport terminal. It’s early morning, and the airport is fairly empty except for you and some other people awaiting their travelers. You shift your weight between your legs as if you were some goalkeeper. Someone is staring at you. You don’t notice. Don’t care.

The scarce crowd of people is slowly dispersing, exchanging with new, tired faces. The world keeps moving on—but you just can’t. He is the light that guides you through hardships, the angel you were desperately needing all your life.

Your eyes flicker around in search of Heeseung, your lovely boyfriend of two and a half years. He went out on a work trip a month ago, and now here you are. Waiting. Waiting for your prince charming to appear and save you from the dread of daily life. To distract you from the pains of loneliness. To make your days easier.

The ambience lightens, and silence slowly replaces it. It seeps into your mind. You hear the blood flowing through your body, beneath your skin. A low ring in your ears, attempting to silence the silence. A shoulder brushes past yours, it’s cold and unfamiliar. Unlike his.

The sound of footsteps emerges from behind you.

Someone taps your shoulder hesitantly. Turning around expectantly, you see a young man. Likely in his early twenties, with a nervous smile on his face which displays his dimples. His thick, black glasses frame his eyes beautifully.

“Hello… I saw you just now, and I just wanted to let you know that you are very pretty. Are you… expecting anyone?” The man’s lips move in a hypnotic way. His voice carrying a soft accent to it, comforting you. His gaze avoids your eyes as he looks elsewhere.

“Yeah. They haven’t arrived though.” You try to smile, but it falters. A reminder of the circumstances. He nods in understanding, finally looking at you with the softest eyes.

“We can sit down and kill some time, if you want.” He offers. Giving you an opportunity to forget about your nervousness. Like a light in the dark.

After pondering for a second, you agree. It would be best to calm down after all the stress you’ve been through. And fortunately, the stress reliever is now served on a silver platter just for you.

“My name’s Soobin, by the way.” He smiles at you, leading you to sit down at a bench nearby.

Seconds turn to minutes. Minutes turn to hours. You never realized, though.

Soobin somehow made conversations move smoothly, lightening the mood whenever it got too dark. Your mood lightened, too. As if he was the sun that illuminated you, the moon.

“It’s gotten pretty late, here’s my number… text me when you get home.” He looked at you with bright eyes.

You both walked out of the airport, heading opposite ways, feeling the cold air of the night caress your face. Darkness engulfs your figure as you walk towards your car.

As you drive home, you receive a text from Soobin.

A smile creeps up your face. Your eyes back on the road, almost arriving home. There was a warm feeling inside you despite how cold it was.

But you forgot. Forgot about him.

He never came back.
