After the deaths of his first wife and her mother, who were both found bludgeoned, Mark Barton, 44, married his second wife in 1995, as well as having two children from his previous marriage. Mark was a prime suspect in the murders, but due to the lack of evidence, no charges were filed against him.
While his wife slept on the morning of July 27, 1999, Mark bludgeoned Leigh Ann, 27, to death. On July 28th during the night, Mark beat his two children, Matthew Barton, 11, and Mychelle Barton, 8, to death. Each body was covered and multiple notes were left. In the notes, Mark denied killing his first wife, told the reason behind the murders, as well as saying that he loved his family. Towards the end of a note read, “I don't plan to live very much longer, just long enough to kill as many of the people that greedily sought my destruction. You should kill me if you can.”
On July 29th, Mark, a day trader, went to the place where he worked and greeted his coworkers with small talk before opening fire, killing four people. He walked to another building close by, All-Tech Investment Group, where he killed five more people. A witness at All-Tech supposedly heard Mark say, “I hope this doesn't upset your trading day” before he opened fire. When the police arrived, Mark had already left the scene. While on the lookout for Mark, the police searched his house, where they discovered the bodies of his family.
After five hours, police managed to find Mark in his van, leading up to a chase. Before the police could get to him, Mark committed suicide at a gas station; making himself his last victim and ending the rampage.
