Sept. 9, 2001: In his first game as a Raven, quarterback Elvis Grbac completes 24 of 30 passes for 262 yards and a touchdown as the defending Super Bowl champs defeat the Chicago Bears, 17-6, at PSINet Stadium.
Sept. 10, 1985: Their five home runs in a doubleheader split in Boston (7-5 win, 5-3 loss) give the third-place Orioles a then club-record 182 homers for the season. “I’m proud of that,” manager Earl Weaver says. “But it’s a damned shame we’re not in the [pennant] race.”
Sept. 9, 1969: Light-hitting shortstop Mark Belanger drives in key runs in both games as the Orioles defeat the Washington Senators, 6-1 and 3-2, at Memorial Stadium. The sweep gives Baltimore 97 victories, tying a club record set in 1964 and 1966.
Sept. 7, 1960: Just 25 candidates show up for football practice at Johns Hopkins, the defending Mason-Dixon Conference champion. Only 15 of 27 returning lettermen are back, says coach Wilson Fewster, who blames academic woes and players getting married for the low turnout.
Sept. 7, 1944: The Maryland Scholastic Association rejects a football proposal that would allow passing from anywhere behind the line of scrimmage. The current rule requires the passer be at least 5 yards behind the line.
Sept. 8, 1937: Navy’s new football practice schedule, with a 5:30 a.m. start, is a hit with the players. “You can get a lot done in the cool of the morning and ... the exercise makes them enjoy their breakfast,” coach Hank Hardwick says.
Sept. 10, 1928: Forty Loyola College football players turn firefighters during practice, using water hoses to douse a blaze in a tool shed adjacent to the campus library.
Sept. 7, 1896: The first-place Orioles sweep a tripleheader from the Louisville Colonels, 4-3, 9-1 and 12-1, in National League play at Union Park. The games begin at 10 a.m. and continue until dark, with a 90-minute break for lunch.

Sept. 11, 1978: Ed Reed, former Ravens All-Pro safety who played 11 years here (2002-2012) and whose 64 career interceptions rank sixth all-time in the NFL.
