What is the 116 club you ask? It's a venue that doesn't have any Yelp reviews, so, we don't really know. According to a 2007 article from the Washingtonian, "lobbyists claim [it] has the best crabcakes in town." 

What we do know is that on Feb. 10, this Washington haunt will play host to more lobbyists and more Democratic members of congress than you can shake a stick at — and trust us, that's a whole lot.

The get together is being held in honor of former Rep. Mark Critz, D-Pa., who's making a run for the Keystone State's Lt. Governor. Nancy Pelosi, Steny Hoyer and Mike Doyle will all be on hand to cheer on their congressional colleague. As will lobbyists who represent Lockheed Martin, the American Coatings Association and Duke Energy when they're not attending Capitol Hill fundraisers.

The real draw? Suggested contributions start at just $100. Which is actually not too steep for a nice plate of crabcakes. (Just kidding, it totally is.)

Mark Critz: The Right Choice For The Twelfth District

 Dear ~FirstName~,  

Congressman Mark Critz has spent more than a decade working on behalf of Western Pennsylvania.

During his first campaign, Mark promised to work with both Democrats and Republicans and he’s done just that—earning a reputation in Congress for working across the aisle on military, veterans, small business, energy and transportation issues. His dedication to working for his district instead of engaging in partisan bickering hasn't gone unnoticed.

In their endorsement, The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette said, "If voters favor bipartisan solutions to the nation's problems and want to help end the gridlock in Washington, the choice is Mark Critz."

I couldn't agree more.

Mark, unlike his Tea Party opponent, is a centrist who understands that as a Congressman his commitment to Pennsylvanians comes first.

While Mark would fight for fair trade and understands that government must act when jobs are being threatened by overseas competition, Keith Rothfus is immersed in ultra conservative policies--and he's already signed the extreme right-wing Grover Norquist pledge.

The Twelfth District deserves deserves better another Tea Partier in Congress. We simply can’t afford a return to the same old top-down policies that got us in trouble in the first place.

Independent Expenditures: Weekend Edition

Welcome back to CBMG. Today's Weekend Edition post profiles the independent expenditures filed with the FEC over Saturday and Sunday.  In keeping with last week's increases in political spending, groups disclosed significantly more cash than we usually see over the weekend. Additionally, continuing another trend from the last week, the relative share of  Presidential-oriented disclosures declined in comparison to Senate and House spending. High-profile congressionally-focused pro-Republican groups dominated the spending. 

The quick hits for September 22nd & 23rd:

The Roundup: $3.79 million in political spending disclosed by 13 groups seeking to influence over 25 federal elections.

The Big Spender: The Young Guns groups (YG Action Fund, YG Network) saddled up over the weekend and ponied up over $1 million for TV ads and mailers opposing 4 democrat candidates for the House - Mark Critz (D-PA), Lois Frankel (D-FL), John Barrow (D-GA) and John Tierney (D-MA).  Young Guns groups have increased their IE presence of late, filing disclosures with the FEC in 3 of the past 4 days. Two other prominent pro-Republican groups, Freedomworks for America and the Congressional Leadership Fund, spent heavily, disclosing $756K and $638K respectively. A frequent big spender and pro-Democrat group, Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, spent over $500 opposing Republican House candidates.

Cashing In: National Media Public Affairs earned $958K over the weekend with American Media & Advocacy Group not far behind, pocketing $947K. Over the past month, NMPA received $4.5 million from YG Action Fund and the American Chemistry Council.  AMAG has earned nearly $3.4 million over the past 4 months from American Action Network and the Congressional Leadership Fund.

House or Senate? The House. House elections attracted $2.6 million, Senate races only $1 million.

The Hotspot: Ohio. Outside spending groups targeted elections in the Buckeye State with $917K. Groups also spend heavily in Pennsylvania ($555K) and Florida ($595K).

The High Striker: The Republicans. Pro-Republican groups disclosed $2.9 million over the weekend. Democrat groups disclosed over $890K. In a modest disparity, for every dollar disclosed by the Dems, Reps spent $3.25.

The problems they're facing were generated by a republican congress and a republican president... they're coming after the rural post offices... these post offices are the center of a lot our communities... they don't take a cent of taxpayer money but it's the government trying to run them out of business.

The GOP loser to Democrat Mark Critz in last year's elections to replace Jack Murtha did no fundraising last quarter and still has a mountain of self-debt. The 12th District is one of those in the crosshairs to be eliminated in redistricting anyway, so Burns may not have anything to run for.
