Why does an orchestra rush?
Mark Gibson, author of The Beat Stops Here: Lessons on and off the Podium for Today's Conductor and Director of Orchestral Studies at the College-Conservatory of Music, University of Cincinnati, has offered us his own list of reasons why an orchestra rushes:
Because it’s easy
Because it’s hard
Because it’s pizzicato
Because it looks fast (16th’s, 32nd’s, etc.)
Because the figure repeats
Because there are scales, either ascending or descending
Because rests aren’t counted
Because notes aren’t played for their full duration
Because of conductor error
Gibson also offers a few thoughts and pieces of advice for anyone dreaming of conducting an orchestra:
Is this how I want it to sound?
What you think is down is not down.
Making space is not an afterthought.
Inform the hand with pulse.
Who holds you artistically responsible?
“Art” confuses the orchestra.
Excess vertical space = conductor “muffin top.”
Once your hand goes up, you can no longer make subito f or p
There must be a reason for any rebound.
Make shrewd decisions about where to start from in rehearsal.
You are the vessel of emotion.
Active music doesn’t require active conducting.
Encourage bow strokes
With these pearls of wisdom, go forth and follow your dream of conducting and orchestra.
