The Political Chestnut
December 10, 1903
A monkey Wall St. places Anti-Roosevelt Chestnuts in the fire, trying to tempt cat Mark Hanna off his stool.
The caption reads "Hanna - No Cat's Paw of Me, Mr. Monk!"
Hanna was the only possible Republican who could contest Roosevelt for the 1904 nomination, and was being courted by business interests to do so, but so far had not declared any intention to run. This is a reference to the fable of the Monkey and the Cat, wherein the cat retrieves chestnuts for a monkey, but burns its paw in the process and gets nothing in return.
