People's bravery is truly inspiring

First published in the Sunshine Coast Daily on Tuesday 18 March 2014 By the time you read this I may well have no hair on my head. Don’t worry the job hasn’t got to me, it’s all for a good cause. As regular readers of this column would know I signed up for the World’s Greatest Shave a few weeks ago and became a proud member of Team Adem. I was lucky enough to meet Adem Crosby on a couple of occasions, and you couldn’t help but be inspired by him. Diagnosed with leukaemia in 2010, he dedicated the next three years of his life to raising awareness and money for cancer research. In that time, his Team Adem consisting of family, friends and supporters collected more than $260,000 for the Leukaemia Foundation, becoming the highest fundraiser in Queensland. Less than 12 months after losing his battle with illness, Team Adem was out there again this year to continue his good work. I’d like to thank all my sponsors who helped me pass the $10,000 mark and special mention should go to his sister Miranda who raised more than $12,000. That’s the remarkable thing about being the Mayor – you meet some truly wonderful people. Just last week I had the pleasure of being introduced to two organ donation recipients. 15 month old Cooper Watson and Barbara DeRidder may be worlds apart in age but they share a very special bond – both have received kidney transplants. I joined them to support the campaign Have the chat that saves lives. Both of them are living proof of the vital importance of letting your family know if you’d like your organs to be donated. Cooper was born with polycystic kidney disease and was successfully transplanted late last year after the generous donation of a kidney. Barbara received her precious gift of life 35 years ago, and is still living an active and full life thanks to the decision made by an anonymous family regarding organ donation. It’s just so important to let your family know your donation decision. I’ll end this week on the Morcombe family, and the inspirational work they have done for more than a decade. Millions of words have been written about last week’s conviction so I’ll keep my comments to Bruce, Denise and their boys. As a region we admire your tenacity, bravery and love – you are an example to us all. We will never forget, and Daniel will always be in our hearts.

Secrets to success

First published inthe Sunshine Coast Daily on Tuesday 4 March 2014 I recently saw an interesting post on the social media site Linked In about the secrets of successful people, and the downfalls of unsuccessful people. It got me thinking about what traits determine whether a region reaches its potential, or falls short. On the whole, I think the characteristics for individual success can be just as pertinent to a group of people, or in this case a region. The article identified about a dozen traits – but let’s stick to three; willingness to accept change, being organised, and having goals. Firstly, the Sunshine Coast can embrace change or fear it. I heard a great quote the other day about technology – “The rate of change has never been as fast, and it will never be this slow again.” As a region we can either harness change, or hide from it. I’ll give you an example of how Council has adapted to change. In the last decade power prices have given a jolt to everyone’s electricity bills. Council had two choices – continue to fork out $11 million every year – or look at alternative ways to source its power. Council committed to a solar farm at Valdora – and if the numbers stack up will proceed with the project later this year. We embraced change and should be better for it. Secondly the Sunshine Coast can keep a “to-do” list or it can fly by the seat of its pants. Or to use another of my favourite quotes “if you fail to plan, you plan to fail.” One of the things the region has put on its “to-do” list is to create a stronger economy. A major step was taken in that direction last year with the development of our first truly collaborative Regional Economic Development Strategy which is now implemented. This is a plan for success. Lastly, create a “to-be” list. For too long the Sunshine Coast used to shout from the roof tops what it didn’t want to be – “We don’t want to be another Gold Coast” – but we failed to articulate what we did want to be. We are further down that track these days as we strive to become the most sustainable region in the country, with a sustainable economy, environment and community. If we embrace change, stick to our “to-do” list and aspire “to-be” what we want – success is sure to follow.

Presenting Adem with his Sunshine Coast Junior Citizen of the Year Award in 2013 This story was first published in the Sunshine Coast Daily on 26 February 2014Shaving all my hair off was not one of the things that crossed my mind when I thought about running for Mayor – but I now feel privileged to be in the position to do so. Let me first go back to a meeting I had with a young man called Adem Crosby in January last year. 19 year old Adem didn’t’ know it, but he’d been selected as the Sunshine Coast Junior Citizen of the Year. It was in recognition of his efforts to raise money for cancer research, and heighten awareness about the disease. This was an incredibly personal mission of Adem who had been diagnosed with leukaemia in 2010. In that time, his Team Adem consisting of family, friends and supporters collected more than $260,000 for the Leukaemia Foundation, becoming the highest fundraiser in Queensland. So I think everyone would agree that he was an ideal choice as our Junior Citizen of the Year. Adem was being treated in the Nambour Hospital at the time so I was given the great honour to personally deliver his award to him in the cancer ward. What sticks with me about that meeting was Adem’s humility, sincerity and complete lack of self-pity. Here was a young man who had every reason to complain and question the fairness of it all – but instead he rose above it to think of others, and those who would follow him. Just four months later he lost his battle with cancer, and the Sunshine Coast was much poorer for his passing. Less than a year later his legacy continues and Team Adem is still at it, raising even more money for the Leukemia Foundation in the World’s Greatest Shave. It’s my great privilege to be a member of that team this year and there’s still plenty of time to join us – or support someone who has. Don’t forget you can also colour, wax or even shave off a beard. All going well I’ll be shaving off my hair on March 14 – but I’ll leave the final word to Adem’s sister Miranda who will lose her beautiful long locks on the same day. “I know first hand how these funds really help other patients and families who have been diagnosed with a blood cancer and who knows….. the money I raise may be the funds that help find a cure for this horrible illness.”

Teamwork - vital in society and sport

First published in the Sunshine Coast Daily on Tuesday 18 February 2014 American Football legend Vince Lombardi once said: “People who work together will win, whether it be against complex football defenses, or the problems of modern society.” I couldn’t agree more, and with the rugby league and AFL seasons just a couple of weeks away, I thought it would be interesting to explore parallels between sport and government. Although you would be a brave person to try and pick a winner in any of the codes this early – I think you can say with some certainty what sort of teams will win in 2014. The teams that will achieve great things this will have unity of purpose, big goals, good work ethic, discipline and a high level of individual and group accountability. As a longtime Broncos fan I expect nothing less from my club, and I’m sure you’re the same. I think it’s fair for you to expect a similar level of commitment from your elected officials. In the past I believe there was not enough teamwork between the three levels of government representing the Sunshine Coast. On occasions there were great individual efforts, but the play was liable to break down by the players not talking with each other and striving for a common goal. That’s one of the reasons I established Sunshine Coast First. This team includes all the Councillors and State and Federal members of the government – I even handed out footy jumpers to remind us that we are on the one team. We have already seen success in the shape of a single voice on major issues; in particular our determination to see the Bruce Highway upgraded, the rail line duplicated from Beerburrum, and a new runway at the Sunshine Coast Airport. There’s still a long way to go before we get a final result – but if we continue to work together we’re in there with a fighting chance. I’ll leave the final say to rugby league’s greatest coach Wayne Bennett and his description of what it’s like to achieve a goal as a team – in this case a rugby league premiership. “The knowledge that it was done by a team, and couldn’t have been done individually, is what I love most. The guys who share that win with you are your friends for the rest of your life, because no one else knows exactly what you went through to achieve that. That’s what makes it so special.”
